I do a bit of flight simulation on my computer, and I've done a lot of reading on this subject, and I by no means claim to be anywhere near proficient in this area. I will put the missile on my beam, do a series of loaded climbs and dives, and break into the flight path of the missile, all the while dispensing a lot of chaff and flares, but I still have trouble with BVR shots from opponents with AMRAAMs.
If it helps, I'm flying NovaLogic's F-16 MultiRole Fighter. I was wondering, what F-16 pilots trained to do to evade a BVR missile shot?

| Standard Beam and Chaff. AMRAAMs are gonna get you if it was a good shot within the DLZ. Better trick, don't let them lock you up to begin with. Use terrain masking and such. |

| If being fired on from a long range: turn around 180 and run, full burner!! At close range: drop stores and manoeuvre like hell!! |

He is asking about a game. Falcon4.0 tells you the same amount I have. |

Thanks for the tips, they help. I had tried turning and running, and it is working most of the time. Terrain masking seems to work if I'm against older Russian aircraft, such as the MiG-23. But against a Flanker or Fulcrum, or even another Viper, it doesn't seem to work. I kill first when I can, but there are those times when I just can't get position quickly enough. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong, but I can't put my finger on it yet.
Again, thanks for the help.

| In the Novalogic F-16 sim, I found out that its easier to survive if you send your wingman in front of you, and back him up. The enemies seem to try to "take care" of him first, not giving you that much attention. |

| How do you send him in front of you? Do you tell him to attack your target, or cover me? |

Don't be surprised, all those bad boys have Doppler pulse radars so unless you're hiding behind a terrain feature, flying low won't help you much. As for not doing things wrong, don't sweat it. Anything that gets classified as an AMRAAM, be it Alamo, Adder or Slammer is damn hard avoid. Particularly the Slammers and the Adders.
I'm playing Falcon 4 with the SP4 patch and I've noticed that my best chance against Fulcrums and Flankers is to keep asking AWACS about their position, detect them first and get my whole flight to shoot at them... preferably before they get a missile or two in the air. If they DO fire at me, I usually reply with a missile of my (mad dog, if necessary) and begin evasive maneuvers while telling my wingies to keep them of my back. And then, survival is a matter of how many missiles were launched at you, from how far away and how many countermeasures you've got left. |

| Im playing sp4 too. I believe that you must suprise them with the help of Awacs. Do not let them fire to you so easily .If you are hunted by aim120, the only way to survive is to start up-down-up-down maneuvers and engage the ECM. Drop flares only when the missile has changed to IR Guidane and reduce the use of afterburner. Some times it is good to see the missile coming to you,so you know how to response. I think that practice is everything. |

The F-16 MRF game isn't very realistic. I've flown it for over 5 years. Missile avoidance is easy(for the Nova F-16 only). On the mini-radar(F11 Key), you will see a "V" that is formed which is how much you can view with your onboard radar(saying AWACS has been shot down). When a missile is launched, a red line will appear at around 4-5 miles inbound toward your aircraft. I suggest you zoom in your radar to about 30-40 NM(press S or X?). As missile is coming, make sure the red line(missile) overlaps with one of the lines forming the "V". this is 90-95% effective in missile avoidance, no need to go up and down and right and left.
For online game play, that's a diff story. Most pilots in IBS(Integrated Battle Space) use a two missile combo from the rear at less than .5 NM(over 90% kill rate for those pilots who love to fly with the auto-pilot). I suggest you keep your ears and eyes open when playing online in IBS.
I know the game is old, and is dying, but if you need help, I can still teach you how to fly F-16 MRF by Nova. |

Here's a pic, I don't know how to upload yet so I hope it works. If it's not clear, copy this link:

The red line isn't completely visible but if you look close enough, it's there. |

| You can practice missile evasion in PC flight sims all you want but if you want to know the what why and how of such maneuvers you need to read Robert Shaw's book "<a href="modules.php?op=modload&name=books&file=index&bkid=5">Fighter Combat: Tactics and Maneuvering</a>". You can find links to the book in the <a href="modules.php?op=modload&name=books&file=index">Military Aviation Books section</a> of this website. |

I've seen quotes from that book, I'll have to get a copy of it sometime.

Does this show up on your radar MFD, or do you have to use the mini-radar to see it? |
