What VPRGUY said reminded me of an article I read awhile back. This is a annual survey that is done for aviation jobs in the civilian sector by AMT magazine.

VPRGUY - So I should leave Eglin off the dreamsheet since it does NOT have F-22s?
If I were you, I would have Eglin at the very TOP of my list. There are a couple good reasons for this, aside from living in Florida.
1) You may get assigned to the 33rd Fighter Wing, which at the moment is flying some of the oldest F-15's in the Active Duty fleet. The flip side? The 33rd is set to be taking over on the F-35 to become the primary F-35 training base for pilots and maintainers within the next 5 years, and I think everyone can agree that the F-35 is at least on par with the F-22, if not even higher up on the technological scale. Since you're looking to stay as a 3X1, I don't think you'll ever have a better opportunity to step right into 3X2, or at least be on a super-high-end airframe.
2) You may get assigned to the 46th Test wing, which will leave your options wide open as well. If you get the F-16 side, you'll work everything from "analog" block 15 F-16's to some of the newest 'digital' block 50's. If you get the F-15 side, you'll have both F-15C/D's and F-15E's (totally different airplanes from an avionics point of view, from what I've heard). You may also be assigned to the A-10's there, where you'll be in on the developement of the A-10C, the newest A-10 variant with the fancy "glass" cockpit and new gizmo's. Regardless, you'll get to have your fingers in the developement and testing of numerous weapons and avionics systems, and that kind of varied background will look good in a retraining package should you decide to push for cross-training (or get out and need to pad a resume). |

Cool, so it is settled then. Things should turn out well in either 331 or 332; I'm happy about that. I haven't been around the US much. I live in California and I've only been to Vegas a handful of times (but Vegas doesn't count ). How is life at Tyndall/Eglin? Elmendorf? My sister thinks I should try to go to RAF Lakenheath or some other overseas base, but I don't want to kill any chance at working on F-22s. I lived in England for more than a decade, I should fit in there pretty well |
