This is funny. "The JSFs are “louder” than the four aircrafts primarily used at China Lake."

From a community that has EA-6s ( loud but really annoying when taxiing). Harriers... (yeah those are quiet Laughing

)... and the Hornet family. )

Have to wait and see but if you can put up with the rest of those above......

Biggest thing that will make them loud is their sheer size.

The F414 nozzles on the F/A-18E is half the size or less than the F135 engine. With all that high velocity exhaust air, moving at even higher speeds than the former engines, the result is a no-brainer. Doh

The only engine even close would be the RR (PW) F402 in the Harrier. It's fan would be close in size, but the velocity of it's exhaust will be nothing compared to that of the F135. Shocked

I'd like to hear the F135 in full burner compared the a F101 in full burner.

The JSF is not really stealthy when it comes to sound.

However with internal stores it might be quieter at high speed, it might be able to go faster loaded without burner. Thusly at high speed loaded it might be quieter. Just speculation on my part.

Even cruising around at high-subsonic speeds, the engine would be near MIL power.

At MIL the F135 is suppose to make about 28K Lbs of thrust. Almost as much as a GE-129 or PW-229 at MAX AB!? Shocked

I'm sure the biggest problem will be the take-offs. At MAX that engine has to be deafening! Twisted Evil

Out of curiosity what is the db @ MIL of the F135 compared to the db of the GE-129 or PW-229 @ MAX AB? Wink

I'm sure it's been tested, but I have no idea where one would find it.

The DOD does all kinds of environmental studies around bases to include noise.

I have heard speculation that the noise, at least right in close proximity to a base, might be less with the F35 as the aircraft will be up and away in a shorter period of time, so the duration and range of the sound will be lower than with legacy aircraft with slower time-to-climb.

There will also be much fewer of them since they will replace the legacy aircraft at a rate better than 3:1. Just a S.W.A.G. but I'll be the Air Force will only by 500-600 of them to replace all the Vipers, Eagles and Hogs.

1/3 the jets, only 1/3 the noise?

They are not meant to replace the Eagles.

As it stands now you will see 2000+ lighnings in USAF colours. Even if congress gets the hatchet out, after the dramatic cuts to the F22 programe, i doubt the number will drop below 1500 F35A's.

The Raptors originally started out in the 750 range and are now only slated for 183. That's only about 25% of the original total. 25% of 2000 Lightnings is 500-600.

Just thinking that 350 is as fast as they'll let us go around here when we're not in the MOAs (400 in a rejoin). So I was taking into account that the Lightning will get to 350 quicker and will require a much lower power setting to hold it. I love the sound of freedom as well, I wake up everyday when the first jet here lights the wick. They are a pretty reliable alarm clock. Very Happy
