My thoughts the same. Our F-16's had cost 12 million each, airframe costs at delivery (block 15) added with MLU upgrade. Newly built Block 50+'s are 30 ish. You need a Japanese F-2 or a Block 60 to get into the same price range of the JSF, of 45-60 million each. Even then the JSF is likely to still be more costly than those in the end.

$12 mil each? Not a chance. In 1999 I paid $25 mil each for USAF Block 50s.

We paid 6 mil in 1994 for Block 15's not 50's, then MLU kit added 6 million on top of that...roughly. They were el cheapo, but then I think we could have been better served if we had bought newly built block 50's for the second batch in 1999 (wich was second hand ANG block 15's). We wouldnt be so late making the MLU's if we had decided this way.

i think that was the unit cost back when they were making Block 15's.

And $12 million 1980 dollars is $32 million 2006 dollars and $26 million 1999 dollars. Inflation is a bitch.

OMG! Regarding the original question. The Block 60 guy might as well not even go up if he knew he would face the Lightning II (but in reality he wouldn't know it until he's playing the golden harp).

And advanced F-16s such as the Block 50/52+s and Block 60s aren't that cheap either. Relatively, for the price of one advanced F-16, you can get an F-35A. Hmmm...hard decision for me.

But for some, the advanced vipers are just fine for their air force.

Wrong, I told you it was in 1999 with the second batch that we got the MLU Kits, so the inflation would be since that year. Wich is not that much mind you.

Nah - if it was the F-16 Block 10 to 50 then that would at least beat the F-35 on looks but thats about it - slight problem at BVR if the F-35 has AMRAAMS because the 16 wont know where the 35 is.

If somehow the two got close WVR and both had helmet sights and AIM-9X's then its evens - though IMO they are both toast at the same time Smile
