| Very clearly they are talking about a whole new jet, not creating a two seat Raptor. |

Yes the FB-22...
Check out these artist impressions.
Not to be outdone Northrop Grumman is keeping they're eye on the game too... |

More FB-22 stuff
http://www.secretprojects.co.uk/forum/i ... 971.0.html
I particularly like FB-22-1 in the attached picture.
And from this week's AvWeek
"Lockheed Martin officials privately say they are looking at two two-seat concepts. The first is a new version of the F-22 with a large wing—redesigned from the FB-22 concept—for more fuel. But unlike the bomber wing, it will allow supersonic cruise. A fuselage plug will add the second seat and a larger weapons bay that could include advanced, long-range missile designs. The company estimates the second seat would add only about 10% to the airframe cost. It could become an option for the 2018 USAF bomber competition." |

The biggest problem I see is funding. If we can only get 183 F-22s, where's the funding gonna come from for the FB-22?
As the line from The Right Stuff goes, "You know what makes those rockets go up? Funding makes those rockets go up. No bucks, no Buck Rogers." |

Well, it could happen... If one of the situations listed here were to occur...
1. USAF presents $20 Billion "new bomber" program to Congress and they laugh.
2. USAF spends $20 Billion on said bomber program, then Congress changes contract and limits production to 3 aircraft at $4.2 Billion each versus the original 50 @ $250 Million each.
(Like the B-2 or Raptor Programs but worse)
3. USAF spends $20 Billion on said bomber program, but a presidential hopeful has sworn to kill it due to excess spending.
(Note: Hope for next president to restart program after following election)
Program slips 10 years...
4. Congress won't spend money on "new" B-1 or B-2 aircraft that have already been designed and produced because they are "old"
5. All B-52s are grounded permanently tomorrow for some unknown reason.
(Which is VERY unlikely as they have been flying now for over 50 years and what can go wrong did over two decades ago!)
6. All the B-1s and B-52s are reactivated from AMARC to be used and the USAF can't find parts anywhere else to keep them flying.
7. Boeing can't figure out how to put a bomb-bay on the KC-767 Common Widebody Tanker/Transport/AWACS/JSTARS/Bomber/etc...
NEVER say Never...
Sorry I couldn't resist...
FYI Save this post; in future it could get even funnier! |
