Sino al 23 ottobre, all'aeroporto "Pagliano e Gori" l'attività di volo sarà interdetta, causa lavori di rifacimento alle due testate della pista. Pare che il manto superficiale sia piuttosto usurato e tale da compromette le normali operazioni di decollo e atterraggio dei velivoli. L'attività dei due squadroni componenti il 31esimo Fighter Wing sarà quindi interrotta, unitamente alle quotidiane "visite" di aerei Nato. La Base pedemontana è infatti oramai assurta a sorta di "porto" per il transito di caccia e trasporti battenti svariate bandiere: italiana, greca, turca, tedesca, olandese, spagnola, eccetera.

Nella giornata odierna sono altresì attesi gli atterraggi degli F-16 del 555esimo "Triple Nickel" squadron di rientro dai quattro mesi di trasferta operativa presso la base sudcoreana di Kunsan. Gran parte del personale di supporto è da poco rientrato al "Pagliano e Gori" per mezzo di voli di linea. Viceversa, sempre quest'oggi, una aliquota di cacciabombardieri dello squadron gemello "Buzzards" partirà alla volta dell'aerobase di Graf-Ignatievo, sita in Bulgaria, dove i piloti avranno l'opportunità di esercitarsi in appositi poligoni (cosa non attuabile in Italia), oltre che misurarsi in tattiche aeree contro velivoli di diversa concezione (i MiG di produzione ex sovietica). Questo Paese è un partner dell'UE ed è in procinto di entrare a far parte del Patto Atlantico, avendo peraltro già fornito assistenza logistica alla Nato nel corso delle operazioni militari degli ultimi anni, a partire dalla crisi balcanica.

Nel frattempo, al Municipio di Zoldo Alto (nel cui territorio il 18 settembre scorso è precipitato un F-16 di stanza ad Aviano) è avvenuto un primo incontro tra la nostra Aeronautica Militare e la locale giunta, onde stilare gli accordi logistici per lo sgombero e il ripristino ambientale (leggasi bonifica) della zona dell'impatto aereo. In base agli accordi bilaterali occorrerà stabilire se le operazioni saranno condotte a cura e spese degli Usa, o se dovrà incaricarsene il Comune di Zoldo Alto, rivalendosi successivamente sugli americani. Secondo indiscrezioni, nei prossimi giorni ad Aviano avverrà una visita da parte di nostri parlamentari.

10/26/2007 - AVIANO AIR BASE, Italy -- Members of the 31st Fighter Wing wrapped up Rodopi Javelin 2007 today, a three-week exercise, marking the second time the 510th Fighter Squadron participated in a joint exercise with the Bulgarian air force at Graf Ignatevio air force base, Bulgaria.

The exercise, which began Oct. 5, allowed members of both the U.S. Air Force and the Bulgarian air force to perform low-level flying,air-to-ground gunnery, basic fighting maneuvers, and backseat orientation and intercept training.

The joint exercise included academics and flying missions in F-16s and MiG-29 aircraft. Daily missions consisted of briefings, tactical intercept (radar and ground control intercepts) and basic fighting maneuver flights where pilots would maneuver within visual range to engage "enemy" aircraft, followed by debriefings in which U.S. and Bulgarians personnel discussed their experiences.

Lt. Col. Adrian Pone, 510th FS commander, said many benefits came from this exercise.
"We were able to further strengthen our relationships with the Bulgarians while gaining realistic training and exchanging ideas across the career field spectrum," he said. "Our members who were part of this exercise, whether they were pilots, maintainers or air traffic controllers, received invaluable lessons during the past three weeks."

The Bulgarian air force participants, led by Graf Ignatevio AFB commander, Brig. Gen. Rumen Radev, were able to further develop regulations, tactics, techniques and procedures, formulate requirements of their pilots' knowledge and skills development, learn NATO standardization and interoperability and establish realistic training processes.

"Our Bulgarian MiG pilots are much improved since the 2005 deployment when the 510th Fighter Squadron first came here (during Viper Javelin)," he said.

General Radev and Colonel Pone discussed the future of joint exercises with Aviano and Graf Ignatevio aircraft.

"We could have a potential "mini flag" exercise," Pone said. "The training opportunities here are endless."

General Radev agreed. "We are able to provide plenty of airspace, contemporary facilities, low level training and great training ranges," he said. "I look forward to the next exercise which will afford us even greater training in a realistic environment."

Everybody at the Cal Bar knows whats going on at that place.
