Overall duties etc...can you be a bit more specific as to what your looking for!

SDI 8P100 - Defense Attache Overview - I know a few

Specialty Duty Summary. (Note: This is a special duty assignment job. It is not available to new enlistees). Manages and maintains Defense Attaché Office (DAO) budget and fiscal data, maintains DAO information files, coordinates United States (US) military aircraft over-flight and landing clearances with host country officials, coordinates office support requirements with embassy officials, and performs office administrative and support duties according to Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) standards. Related DoD Occupational Subgroup: 510.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Maintains DAO budget and fiscal data. Prepares and submits the DAO budget according to DIA regulations and guidance provided by the embassy budget and fiscal officer. Projects budget requirements for DAO rental housing; house furnishings; and purchases and maintenance of vehicles, travel, and salaries of US civilian and foreign nationals employed by DAO.

Maintains DAO reporting requirements. Submits and updates information reports. Maintains the master suspense file for all DAO information reporting and updates reporting requirements directed by higher headquarters. Prepares, edits, and types information reports for attaches. Maintains central research files. Provides feedback to attaches on quantity and quality of their information reporting. Maintains information reporting statistics.

Coordinates US military aircraft over-flight and landing clearances with host country officials. Obtains diplomatic clearance for ship visits and aircraft over-flights and landings from the host government. Provides briefings to US ship and aircrew members concerning host country immigration, laws, customs, and courtesies. Arranges for lodging and transportation, provides information on local tours, sporting events, and community relations projects for crews. Arranges for handling of US military aircraft at host country's civilian airfields (includes aircraft services such as fuel, power carts, lighting, and security). Arranges for handling of US Naval vessels at host country ports (including food, water, and banking services).

Coordinates DAO support requirements with embassy officials. Procures housing, house furnishings, and official vehicles for DAO personnel. Arranges shipping of privately-owned vehicles and household goods; obtains passports and visas. Purchases office supplies.

Performs DAO administrative duties. Maintains correspondence files, forms, technical orders, and publication accounts. Prepares, types, edits, and dispatches office correspondence. Conducts personnel and financial actions for assigned military and civilian personnel, to include coordinating with embassy officials and representatives of various US military services.

Special Duty Qualifications:

Knowledge. Not used.

Education. For entry into this SDI, completion of high school or general educational development equivalency is mandatory.

Training. For retention of this SDI, completion of training with the Joint Military Attache School in Washington, D.C. is mandatory.

NOTE: Award of this SDI without a final Top Secret (TS) clearance is authorized provided an interim TS has been granted according to AFI 31-501.

Experience. Not used.

Other. The following are mandatory as indicated:

For entry into this SDI:

1. Be an E-5, 7-skill level, or above.

2. No record of military or civilian convictions (except minor traffic violations).

3. No record of disciplinary action or financial irresponsibility.

4. Minimum typing ability of 35 words per minute.

For entry, award, and retention of this SDI, eligibility for a Top Secret security clearance according to AFI 31-501, Personnel Security Program Management.

Citizenship Yes

Yeah I've found everything there is to be found on the net. Just need some personal opinions on people who have been there done that.

Well I do know a few now in D.C., if you like, I'll ask them if they have time to chat about it. I'll see if they are willing to let me share their phone numbers so you could speak with one of them (if you like).


Let me know, I have worked rather closely with many on a daily basis, the logistical portion (researching information, running down statics's, defense contracts information limitations, budgeting data) meetings, and such keeps them very busy.

Takes time to learn much of it, having a background in resource management, supply with maintenance knowledge does not hurt either. International Traffic and Arms Treaties, Import and Export Trade Controls would help, being familiar with existing country agreements (based on what I see and do myself, our fields are closely related in Foreign Disclosure too).
