Neither the F-5 or T-38 had built in intake screens for FOD. Even the ground run screens did not look like this.
The doors open on the bottom of the aircraft are the speed-breaks.
The T-38s/F-5s didn't have much of a FOD problem from what i remember. The Mig-29 on the other hand has the nose-gear positioned just in front of the low mounted intakes. The FOD door approach makes sense for it. The auxiliary doors for such an arrangement would be on the upper surface of the aircraft not below. Using the lower side would only increase the FOD especially behind the nose gear.
The F-16's low intake also creates a FOD hazard even though the nose-gear is beneath the intake. The suction of the engine is close enough to the ground to pull water up into the intake.
Look at the closeup of the intake cover. It appears to be solid red, with yellow markings. There are no dark areas to indicate any type of small opening, no pattern or mesh that can be seen.
I still think the photos are poor fakes... If the aircraft is real, it seems a propaganda trick photo to make it appear to be a working example. Heat is easy to fake in a photo...
If the aircraft is real and functional is there capacity for production in numbers? Based off the F-5 and it's engines, I would doubt it would do well in a fight against 4th or 5th generation fighters. Consider the physical size of the intakes and engines. Also figure they are adding structure/weight to the basic F-5. These two factors alone would indicate an aircraft of less performance than the original.
Note: When the F-5F was redesigned into the F-20 (F-5G), even it retained the single tail...
I'll still put my money on a Viper if it ever comes to a fight! |

Many thanks for clearing that up There are even more pics where some sort of cover appears in the intakes with heat haze from the exhaust so they definitely have to correct many more of them |
