Gang,

First post to the site, several years reading. I've Flown blk 25,30,40,42,50 and a towershaft failure equals flame out landing or the nylon letdown. As I am aware of only one such failure in the F-16 and it was around the 82' timeframe. The pilot successfully bailed out, and is currently a retired instructor at Luke. A PTO shaft failure, although a bummer, you can get the jet restarted and effect a landing.

Cheers

Exactly. Whenever I had to ride console shotgun and the IP decided to give the noob the TS fail, he'd always preface it by sayin' "you'll probably never....ever....see this...", then give it to him. Once the kid bailed a couple of times he'd be talked thru a recovery using a BUC Air start. YIKES!!

It doesn't have to be the FO or Nylon letdown. But when you are IN FO parameters than i would go for the FO option also. But if i'm not, i would go for the airstart. I prefer a landing on three tires instead of my own to feet!!!

I remember reading about it... I will have a look and post something about it next week... I think I saw in the old Pilot Awareness book

By the way VprDrvr, With a PTO shaft failure your engine does not fail. So you wouldn't have to restart the engine at all.
