| How many traps does it take to qualify on a carrier in the USN? I assume you need night time landings as well... |

| Initial Qual in the T-45 is 10 day traps. No night traps for initial carrier qualifications for winging. After winging you are assigned / choose your next platform. 18's, Prowlers and E-2/C-2's for tailhookers. At the end of the FRS you carrier qual again and do day traps again and then your first night traps. The number of day and night traps are dependent on wether you are going to a squadron that is deployed (PRI-A) or to a squadron that is based ashore doing workups. |

| Thanks for the reply. So if your squadron is based ashore you generally do less traps? And how many must a US naval aviator perform each year to stay current? |

| If you are a P-3 driver, you probably wouldn't do any. But I have no idea. |

No, P-3 guys dont trap, unless they are in a cod. Only the above listed airplanes trap.
You can go a year or more without any traps dependent on where you are in the work up cycle. The number of traps a pilot does to requal (after the FRS CQ qual) is dependent on when your last day and night trap occured. ie less than 7 days 7-14 days, 30-60 days, 6 months etc. The longer its been, the more traps you need to requal. |

| Damn, I'd sure like to do traps and cat shots! Not as a passenger, but as a pilot. Gotta be the ultimate thrill ride!! |

Cat shots are a blast. Loaded up with high asymetry we will have an end speed in the mid 180kts range in the Rhino. A 5 wet tanker being symetrical gets a burner shot and has about a 164-170 kt end speed.
Just to compare a T-45 gets 115-120 kt shot.
So going from 0 to 185 kts in about 2 seconds will deff. get your attention.
Traps are a lot of fun during the day. Night time is a different story all together. |
