It is interesting to note that the UK MOD at first, was reluctant to release that picture. Somebody might have suggested that it would be a good idea to release it to thumb a nose towards the doubters of this"cold war relic". Typhoon.
The Russians are now spending an amount not far short of what they were spending in 1989 on defence. That was however in 1989 $ so they are now spending considerably less than they were. (about $30 Billion a year).
Someone suggested that it may be time for the Eagles to permanently return to Keflavik if the Russians keep this up? I think that is key, lets see if Putin is just sabre rattling or he wants and is actually ABLE to keep up this tempo.... I would be more worried if they revamped their SSN/SSBN fleet to the numbers they had in the cold war, that would take 20 years.
China is modernizing it`s military rather than having a massive expansion. Russia is doing the same and taking what they have out of mothballs. They are ordering additional Tu-160 Blackjacks but I don`t see that as a worry on it`s own. If they start building up large conventional forces along Eastern European borders again it would be a worry but I doubt they have the capacity they once had. |

There have been interceptions almost daily in the north sea for the past few weeks, mainly 43sqn+111Sqn at Leuchers has gone up and intercepted but recently 3Sqn (sometimes using 11sqn birds on rotation) have been also going up (they have been on Q since mid July but going up for airliner intercepts.etc).
I doubt they will maintain the momentum though, it was only this week they announced they were selling their fleet of 21 An-124s as they can't afford to operate them anymore!
