I think PAF chief is extra exaggerating things when citing his air force as:

Quote:
the only air defence-force in the world that had the additional ability to design or assemble its own aerial warfare platforms and equipment.

They are not even independent when it comes to their total available inventory's assembling for example C-130, F-16 etc.

He says:

Quote:
these aircraft (JF-17), built and assembled with the help of China, were better than F-16 to some extent.

The data available to public, regarding the technology, design, engine, airframe, avionics, combat performance and armament, usually found on different websites, forums, magazines tells a different story.

Although it's a good effort from a developing country but still not as good.

Whenever I have a side view of this aircraft, it seems much like a MiG-21, minus radome.

Many experts present on the forum. Constructive criticism, opinions on the jet will be appreciated.

Regards.

Not a bad aircraft. However you get what you pay for. The newer F-16 should have pretty excellent acceleration, visibility, combat proven weapons. etc.

JF-17 internal fuel 5130lb empty weight 14,200lb fuel fraction 26.59 thrust RD93 18,277lb (approx)

F-16C(generic) internal fuel 7162lb empty weight 18,300lb (-/+) fuel fraction 28.16 thrust block 52 PW's 29,000lb

Of course those are very basic numbers. Start hanging stuff off of the aircraft ( weight and drag ) and your results may vary.

Hi,

I would like to clarify this. what the Air Chief implied was that the JF-17 was better than the 'existing' F-16 A/B block 15s which are in PAF service, in some respects and that area is specifically the radar.

PAF F-16's have the aPG-66 and the KLJ-7 radar from China supposedly is significantly better than the APG-66. Hence the comment that it is better than the 'existing' F-16. A typical case of 'lost in translation'

cheers

Two misconceptions arising here.

1. By saying the PAF made its own stuff and is one of the few who does it, he meant that unlike other countries were local weapon production is in the hands of independent firms PAF is in charge of manufacture as well.

2. Existing PAF F-16 Blk15s do not have BVR and are avionics wise outdated. Even PAF's Mirage ROSE upg has better avionics. The JF-17 has better avionics and BVR compared to F-16s plus being a local aircraft the JF-17 can be customized for a wider array of weapons. In payload the JF-17 is of no match to the F-16.
