Any one know what happened to 78-0013?
It was last noted at Lowry, is it still there, is it on display?
Any one have a photo of this aircraft?

Lowery is home to an air and space museum, called Wings Over the Rockies, but according to their web site there is not an F-16 display. There is a F-16 on display at Buckley AFB in front of the 140th Wing head quarters. I drive by it every day, but couldn't tell you what tail number it is. Here is a link to the museum web site if anyone is interested, and I will look closer at the static display at Buckley tomorrow on my way to work.

The F-16 on display at Buckley AFB is 79-0373.
And here's a photo of it:
 USAF F-16A block 10 #79-0373 is preserved at Buckley AB with a beautiful rainbow behind it on September 30th, 2004.
Unfortunately it is not 78-0013. |

Salute!
Awww maaaan, ol' 013.
If I could just get rid of all the cobwebs behind my eyes..... I thot that was the bird that landed itself after the dweeb flying it punched at a very low altitude. He was trying to deadstick the thing on a dirt road after running outta gas. After checking the F-16.net aircraft history, seems it was another tail number.
The sucker continued down at 15 deg AoA or so (gear down max command, I recall). Hit, broke off one main gear and slithered to a stop. The embarrassed pilot claims to have looked at after doing his PLF and disconnecting the chute. Claims the strobe was still flashing and the EPU was still coughing - trying tom power the FLCS and electrics and hydraulics. Heh heh. We all got a kick outta that one. Dweeb was grounded, BTW. Had a previous incident of questionable airmanship and prolly shoulda been grounded then.
My understanding was Lowry restored the thing and used it for a maintenance trainer.
The lesson-learned from that incident and a later one was that if the only thing wrong was no motor, the the jet would almost land itself straight ahead. With no roll inputs on the stick, it would trim to max authority and stay pretty much wings level.

Thanks to VarkVet's link, I was able to contact the web site owner who sent me two images of 78-0013 which are now on F-16.net and linked to the serial number history. Good news indeed as we had no photo of this airframe.
 USAF F-16A block 1 #78-0013 at Lowry AFB during an open house.
 USAF F-16A block 1 #78-0013 parked inside a hanger at Lowry AFB where it was used as a ground trainer. |
