Guy, I say the lighter the better!
Block 10 'B'; loose the gun, non-flight-essential avionics, some carbon-fiber replacement panels and gear doors (who needs 9G when we're going for speed and/or altitude?) Slap the PW-229 in, and tweak for maximum power.
Sadly the PW-229s DEEC logic does not allow VMAX as all the previous F100s had. The switches are in the cockpits, but the software in the engine ignores it. There are other ways you could tweak out the engine, simply putting in 'bad' (low reading) FTIT probes would gain some operating temp on the engine. Hacking the software in the DEEC would give the most gains. The PW-229 runs pretty tight on it's stall curve; the DEECs do an outstanding job keep the performance curve right next to the stall curve. Too much tweaking and I'm sure we'd end up crossing it. Now if we could just coax some 'modified' DEEC logic from PW we might get a real screamer on our hands. All be it without much TBO... But who's worried about TBO, SFC, or stall resistance when you're going for records?
Would be nice to see the time-to-climb record back in 'western' hands; perhaps taking PW's other single engine turbine engine speed record over from the J75/F-106? MACH 2.31? Need some serious Viper mods to hit that one, but I know the -229 would be up for it.
Now back to -200 discussion..... ouch! They look great for static displays though
To get my Viper off the ground, I'd take a -200 but would look to upgrade ASAP. Either a PW-220 or optimally the PW-229. Could only hope for a government or military-contractor sponsor.
Wishful thinking
TEG
BTW My other 'hot-rod' would be the F-106 w/PW-229 installed! Something along the F-106X, with modified inlets for needed air-flow but no canards (or their weight/drag)
