Hey ya'll,
Just got issued the DCUs for an upcoming trip to Balad and was wondering about the undershirts. Brown only, or is there any other color? ("sand" is a color I've seen but don't know if its authorized for AF.)
Any other knowledge that could be relayed would be great.
Thanks in advance. |

Haven't yet been to the sandbox but I do believe Black is an authorized color under AFI 36-2903. I would say ask your 1st Sgt. If they don't have the answer they can get it. I myself just went to the AF e-publishing site to find and answer myself and I couldn't find anything on DCU wear.

I was just at Balad 332 AMXS and we wore black or brown, but we were issued the brown T shirts. I seen some people wear black and even the army t shirt due to short availablity of brown t shirts over there when I was there. Be prepaired they are real picky on how your uniform looks and the PT uniform is a high interest item there so wear it correctly or you will hear about it. Also on the line it's like being at an ORI everyday as far as the little stuff so be prepaired for it. Also Balad is not that bad it has everything you would want it was much better then what we had at Kirkuk in 03 when we deployed our F-16's there. Also the protection from attacks is excellent they do a great job there I'll leave it with that over a open forum.

Also did they issue you the new uniform? They said they would try to issue it for the upcoming AEF but with delays in fielding it etc like usual for MCS.

No they did not give us the new stuff. 4 sets of the brown, tan and pink. Thanks a lot for the quick responses everybody. Do you guys know what i'm talking about with the "sand" colored shirts? There's a drug store here in the town I live in that has that color shirts and the supply chick said I could wear them. She's a little looney though. No BX anywhere close to me. (Guard guy)

Not sure on that one if it's not issue type brown or black I would be carefull they are picky over there unless your Spec Ops ie combat control PJ's etc I seen them wearing the Army uniform since they are imbedded with them so they have exceptions from them. Check AFI 36-2903 from AF pubs website you can download it from home. I'm not sure if the DCU's are in there I think they are sorry I couldn't be anymore help on that.

One more thing when you stop at your transition point you know where I'm talking about make sure you get a printed hand reciept for all your equipment and inventory it well. We had a few guys come up short especially the AFAK or however you spell it the new first aid kit alot of Bags are missing the pouch for it and they will try to bill you when you leave if you don't have it.

Rog. Thanks for the inventorying tip. I've got a ton of black shirts so i guess that was the most important thing. I'll stay away from the other stuff. How about the body armor, helmet, rifle, etc, is that all daily wear or there just in case? I have'nt had to wear that stuff but i'm sure it's heavy as hell. What about housing? I'm a Staff and was wondering what to expect as far as living when I get there.

Housing is good as a MSgt I had 2 roomates but that was the Guard Pods the actives that are there longer had 2 per room NCO's mostly bepending on their grade. They were building more trying to relieve the 3-4 guys to a POD so who knows when you show up but it will be better. The Airman were still mostly in the Mods with 6-8 guys per room. M-16 etc depends on the BSD I'll leave it as that they change them all the time. Check the Balad thread alot good of guys have said how it is there also for more info. Stay safe....

Here we go again now it's forum bashing please let it go!! As far as what I said is well known knowledge over discussions in other threads "Balad" on rooms etc, in the Red Tail Flyer online over the last 2 years for anyone to see. The AF news about the M-16 thing in fact was on the AF public site about 2 weeks ago. Search the site and you will see about arming up! So I'll leave it as is unless you like following people around and bashing them....

I could give a crap about the M-16, I'm talking about the OPSEC thing. I'm not bashing you at all...but when your spouting off details of housing setup's, its a clear violation of OPSEC. You'd keep the guys over there much safer if you just PM'd them the info rather than putting it all out here for everyone to see is my point. If you think I'm 'bashing you' then report me to the moderator...or please point out where I've wronged you in some way.

Hey thanks a ton FIXER. I certainly didnt see anything wrong with what you said. I think some folks just get a little off center trying to do the right thing. Checksixx, thank you very much for doing what you think is the right thing.
