Any crew chiefs from the 19th FS or 33rd FS during 92 to 93 who has photos of these markings? Aircraft in question is 90-0778. We have modern photos of the markings but looking for markings during that time period

Or how about crew chiefs from the 526th during Deny Flight, jets 89-2009 and more specifically 89-2137. Really want to hear from you crew chiefs!

He asked me to post the question, so I think he's still missing some.

Balls 9 was my jet at Aviano--I talked them into putting the markings back on the jet.

778 is the real mystery.....its just madening, LOL!
For those not aware, 778 was a 19th jet, which was left in Saudi from the 19th deployment to OSW in '92. The 33rd took over and for whatever reason, the 19th left their tub for the 33rd to use, with the understanding that it come back unmolested. Gary North bagged the Foxbat in it, and so the story goes, later that day was wearing 33rd markings.

I know the guys on the L rail, which were there for the MiG kill.....the R is tough. I have 1 decent shot of it....enough to see that the DCCs name is SSgt _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ ...three letter first name, 5 letter last. Pilot assigned to it doesn't recall his DCC.....I even went as far as to track down the guy who's name was on it after the kill, Roy Murray (Odd huh....3 letter first name, 5 letter last?) hoping he'd recall if the guy was peeved about losing his jet. None of the guys I've contacted in the 19th recall who owned 778.....I'm hoping the guy who was DCC on 90-786....Guy Named John Redman, would recall who had the other tub in the 19th, but he's been tough to track down.

This guy's jet is the only one to ever bag a MiG-25....somebody has to know who the crew chief was on it.

Baja is a stellar guy! Look for his jet on the dimes sheet in the works as we speak.

From our serial database, also explains why the aircraft switched units (on the surface).

“MiG-25 kill marking was placed on the left side just below the canopy frame to mark that kill of December 27, 1992. At the time of the kill the aircraft was part of the 19th FS but on loan to the 33rd FS. Gary North, the commander of the 33rd FS and the pilot on that day had the authority to have the aircraft transfered to the 33rd FS after returning from the deployment. Info on Mig Kill from Crew Chief Roy Murray: On 27 Dec 1992 I launched aircraft 90-0778 call sign Benji 41 for a combat mission from Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. The only reason for it flying the combat mission (4 Hours) that day was to take flying hours off it so it could go in for a phase inspection. Most of its flight time during Operation Southern Watch was (FAM) rides for in coming pilots and VIP's, being the only D model. The canopy was so bad that Lt. Col North (at that time) stated "it was like landing with a paper bag on your head. HA! The family bus still got the job done that day. I also remember a reporter asking Lt. Col North why he did not use the cheaper missile, his come back was great; he stated if you were in a fight and had a knife and a gun, which one would you use. We painted the star and a blue tail on it while it was in phase, because it was on loan from the 19th FS at the time, then it became a 33rd FS aircraft. I stayed as the Crew Chief of 778 when we returned to Shaw, AFB and then transferred out with it to Luke AFB, AZ. I took my retirement flight in 90-0778 and launched Gen. North one more time when he came through Luke. I do miss those days!”

I got that from the crew chief I think years ago. I’ll have to see if I can track him down again. Any one know if they can get a hold of Roy Murray? He's our man we want for this aircraft.

Baja, thanks for you photos, the star was placed nicely so the ladder wasn't in the way. Nice job getting it back where it should be.

The kill markings on Balls 9 and 2137 are NOT the original markings....the originals were a double headed eagle/griffion thing in a black shield outline

Yes, and they didn't last long from what I've heard. We have a photo of these markings but need better photos.

They did last awhile. I first arrived on station April of 96...the markings stayed on the jets until they went to either new paints or falcon up...2137 was one of first jets we had go to falcon up, came back clean painted..we gave balls 9 to the dime because it wasn't falcon up so nickel was fully upgraded before dime was...balls 9 still had the old kill marking when i left in april of 98... see aircraft profile for 2137 for the original kill markings in their full splendour

That's good, so the word about them not lasting long isn't correct, better the chance of quality photos.

Of interesting note is that Bob was Scott's wingman when Scott got shot down. There is a nice print of this engagement titled, "Sting of the Black Viper". I've got the #1 AP of it and have met Bob. It was a great engagement.
