Very nice video, very nice jet.
Horizontal stabs stick out way aft ... I guess there will be a time limit for Burner ground runs for us maintainers. |

| Great video. I think one of the reasons (just speculation) why the stabilizers stick out so much is to help with IR management. I also noticed the sawtooth edges of the exhaust nozzle. I got a feeling that the JSF is much more stealthy and capable than the AF is letting on. |

The AA-1 exhaust nozzle and aft fuselage treatment is NOT representative of the production aircraft. Most of the stealth features and components were left out to reduce cost and stay on schedule because they were deemed irrelevant to the AA-1's entire flight test regiment. The AF-1 will have a stealthier aft fuselage treatment and nozzle. |

| DL can you point me in the direction where I can read about it or is this one of those you know because you know things. In which case I will take your statement with a grain of salt. |

Code One Magazine (Lockheed-Martin's publication) had an article titled F-35 in Detail (4th Qtr 2006). In it, various F-35 AA-1 features were pictured closeup and discussed. Some of these were specifically pointed out to be different from that which will go onto the redesigned F-series prototypes and actual production planes. The article included the following [quote]:-
Engine Nozzle
The F-35 is powered by a single Pratt & Whitney F135 engine that produces approximately 40,000 pounds of thrust in afterburner. The thrust makes the Lightning II the most powerful single-engine fighter ever built. To reduce cost, the nozzles of engines flown on the first aircraft do not have the low-observable characteristics that will be found on engines for subsequent aircraft. The geometry of the swiveling nozzle associated with the short takeoff/vertical landing version requires slightly shortened tail feathers.
The article can be found here: http://www.codeonemagazine.com/archives/2006/articles/oct_06/f35_detail/index.html |
