Can anyone tell me can civilians buy military jets? Like old F-16s where the technology would be laging behing the civilian sector so there wouldn be any sensitivity issues or anything like?
And how much would they cost? |

fada,
Thanks for bringing back one of my favorite topics !
This has been discussed quite a bit around the boards. Here's a few good links to get you started:
These should get you started. The forum search on this site can be a bit confusing at times, but a good workaround if you have trouble is to go to google and use site:f-16.net before your search just to search this site.
Best of luck ! |

what is this doing in the f-35 forum?
anyways, I know Don Kirlin and Redair operate a lot of L-39s, a mig-21, and a pair of mig-29s in the USA. They are probably the ones to ask if you are looking for a former military (jet) aircraft. Their website is www.redair.net . If I had a choice between a $300,000 ferrari or porche, or a $300,000 L-39... i don't know why you would ever pick the car.
btw... does anyone know if Don Kirlin ever got his mig-29s operational? Last time I heard, they were still in the hangar in need of parts... |

Good question - we'll see if we can get one of the moderators to move it . |

No problem fada - we all have to learn from our mistakes . I figured the civil and general aviation area was a good bet as it deals with the intended use of the aircraft . |

Depends what you want. If you'd like a Soko Galeb in nice shape, plan on about $35K. Maybe less.
Old warbirds are very cheap to buy nowadays.
Fuel, however, is not cheap. |

How true that is, huggy !!!
There's a few of the jets out there that I've found for under $10,000 in flying condition. Problem is while I could afford to finance the jet, there's also insurance, maintenance and gas. At a couple of grand per flight hour just for gas, it ain't cheap! |

| L-39 is probably one of the best deals for this. If it doesn't have to be a jet, a Yak is not a bad ride either... |

| Well, there's a few issues. Aside from the classified parts, you'd have to figure out how you'd deal with the hydrazine... |

Yes sir. Right now Jet fuel is actually cheaper than 100LL (or Avgas). But that's the norm. In El Paso, Jet is at $5.10 (W/O Prist), and 100LL is at $5.76!!!!!
And people are complaining about high UNLEADED prices...lol. |
