First of all, the question isn't limited just to the f-22. Is there any information out there about the ability to shoot down cruise missiles, or any others for that matter. The only real information I've seen, other than vague allusions, is about the F-14. Is it viable or just something that's almost never talked about?

I think I read that one of Japan's air force requirements was to have the ability to intercept cruise missiles from N-korea via the F-22(hoping).

Great stuff thanks for the links. I'm afraid we are all going to learn a lot about missile defense if/when they start shooting in the gulf.

I guess I haven't looked lately. There seems to be a lot more information floating around on this. I found this one interesting.

Quote:
High-powered microwaves (HPM), which are best produced using the latest generation
of “Active Electronically Scanned Array” (AESA) radar antenna technology, focus electromagnetic
power on a target with extreme precision. By generating a large pulse of
electrical current to flow through the guidance system electronics of a target missile or
the avionics of an enemy aircraft, the critical avionics are destroyed.171 Future aircraft,
such as the F-22, F-35 and EASA-upgraded fighter aircraft, will have built-in antimissile
electromagnetic weapons capability.

Would these measures be able to engage and destroy something like the JASSM-ER dropped from stealth UCAVs ....because Denys Overholser (skunk works affiliate) said "You don't want one of those after you. It is a nasty mother, it cannot be stopped"

F-22 and cruise missile defense has been mentioned by Jumper and now T Michael as one of the useful missions of F-22. It's quick battlefield mobility ( Super Cruise ) and some of the latest versions of AMRAAM that are specifically setup to do better against cruise missiles is what they refer to.
