Has the Raptor been tagged with an unofficial nick name yet?

Over at fencecheck Dozer mentioned nicknaming the raptor the "deathblossom", or simply "god". How bout the "flying football field"?... certainly beats out the eagle when it comes to wing area..

Raptor is pretty good... If you look at the nose, it looks like a beak of sorts.

The Pelican, you know the Boeing X-32 JSF needed to be christened that.

No it would have been the tadpole. Maybe the Marine version could have been the Mudskipper (although even a mudskipper isn't THAT ugly.)

It does have a Pelican like nose and cockpit section. In this respect the F-35 is a sleeker looking aircraft.

I still think the nose looks like a boat but "Toucan". That might have legs.

"SHOWBOAT"
"BOAT"

How can you say that Boeing's take on the jsf was ugly, she was a weapon of a plane, as with most modern fighters, flying art, and the only reason that they lost is because of politics! and maybe that they didn complete all there tests on time!

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess. I thought it was ugly as sin...

BTW, it may be off topic, but a contributing factor to the F-35's selection might have been the fact that they didn't have to pull off a whole bunch of the airplane to do the VSTOL tests Wink

"Deuce Deuce" is also good, I've heard some people suggest "Death Star". I suspect after it has officially seen combat we will get a nickname, probably one like "Butcher" or "Massacre". Laughing

It's not really necessary, and might take a while, as the official name would have made a pretty good nickname.

All those years ago, the YF-22 was derisively called the "Pelican", and the F-22, although far nicer looking overall, still has the pelican-like features. But even so, it doesn't seem to fit anymore. Perhaps this name might have stuck if it were a Navy fighter, or if they renamed Hickam AFB "Pelican Island", or modified the name to "Death Pelican". Razz

I've heard folks call the X-32 the "Monica". Very Happy

I wouldn't say that, myself. The F-22 looks like a rather sleek pelican, while the F-35, as much as I like it (and always have), looks like a chubby pelican fledgling. Smile

That's what happens when you hang out with (or constitute) the wrong crowd. Big No No

What kind of art, some twisted combination of cubism and Rubenesque?

Well then, it's a good thing that by sheer coincidence the USAF also happened to select the superior design for both the JSF and ATF programs. It hardly seems coincidental that the two have a lot in common. I guess we caught a real break there! Smile

Let's see, "Terminator" has already been taken for the Su-37 prototype (unofficially). "Reaper" has been taken as an official name for the MQ-9 armed UAV. What about "Slayer" or "Assassin"? Nah, that's silly. Maybe "Wraith" or some other ghostly name would be appropriate.
