I read where one of the jets involved in the Al Udied mishap returned to flying status recently....which one was it? I s'pose 421 will go back to being the squadron flagship?
Great that y'all are getting them both back, and kudos to the folks who rebuilt 'em! |

What mishap was that?
Just have a look at the F-16.net article "<a href="news_article2321.html">F-16 repaired, ready to fly</a>"
USAF F-16C block 40 #88-0421 crashed into F-16C block 40 #88-0516 at Al Udeid AB, Qatar on June 15th, 2003. Both aircraft suffered severe damage and it was a miracle hat nobody was hurt, considering the fact that the F-16 who was hit was the first of 7 in a row and that the F-16 who hit the second F-16 was carrying live ammo. One of the attached sidewinders even caught fire. |

| We haven't seen either of them yet. They may be signed for, but they're not on the ramp yet. |

| It was 88-0516. 88-0421 isn't due back until later this year. She's flying great. Needs a new paint job, but she flies great. Black Widow pride, baby!!! |

| Thanks for aircraft verification, viper509! Were you deployed with the 421st EFS to the 379th AEW at Al Udeid AB, Qatar, as part of the interim AEF Blue shortly after OIF´s main combat phase? If I remember right, the "Black Widows" deployed only six Vipers (not twelve). And on June 12, 2003, 88-0424 crashed in Iraq southwest of Baghdad. USAF F-16 block 40 #88-0516 belonging to the 421st FS is returned to the 388th FW after extensive damage repair made by the 649th CLSS. The aircraft took two years and 1.1 million dollars to fix before it was returned to the wing during a ceremony on May 7th, 2007. |

Just found on 388th FW´s public website:
The second of two F-16s, repaired for the 388th Fighter Wing by the 649th Combat Logistics Support Squadron, was formally returned to the 388th on October 29th, 2007. The jet, F-16C block 40 #88-0421, was damaged in 2003 while parked on the tarmac of an air base in southwest Asia. The 649th deployed a 10-member team to disassemble and ship both aircraft to Hill AFB for repair in their maintenance facility. The 649th started work on the jet in June of 2005 and finished on October 2nd, 2007, at a cost of $969,000. As part of the repair, the aircraft's front section was replaced with parts taken from a Navy F-16. (Pictured from left to right: Lt. Col. Geoffrey Bacon, 388th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron commander, Col. Michele Smith, 388th Maintenance Group commander, Brig. Gen. Art Cameron, 309 MXW commander, Col. Scott Dennis, 388th Fighter Wing commander, Col. Todd Harmer, 388th FW vice commander and Lt. Col. Brick Izzi, 421st Fighter Squadron commander.)
