| Which highway is that? I saw several freeway sections set up for airplane usage when I lived in Taiwan, 1989 - 1995, but never saw them used. I really enjoyed seeing the Ching Guo fighter, as that airplane was my reason for being in Taiwan. |

28 June 2007:
ROC Minister of Defense Li Tian Yu went to thank the Highway Department of the Ministry of Transportation, for their cooperation during the recent Han Guang 23 military exercise.
27 years ago, before the Zhong Shan Highway was completed and opened, Li flew F-104 and T-33 at low altitude, to evaluate its feasibility as an emergency landing strip.
Li was a former ROCAF F-104 pilot. In early May, he replaced Li Jie as Minister of Defense.

27 July 2011:
F-16(s).
ROCAF, based at Chia Yi AB.
About 11:15 AM, at Cu Xi Village, Shui Shang Town, jet fighter noises damaged glass windows, lights, and tiles on at least three civilian buildings/houses/warehouses. Also activated some anti-theft alarms on cars.
No one was wounded.
As part of their summer activities, pupils were visiting the AB, and being sonic-boomed by a F-16 demo flight.
LI Zhao Fu - deputy director, political warfare department, Chia Yi AB - went to examine the damage, and said the AB would deal with the claims... after he (and his staff, if any) were scolded by the angry villagers at the village.

8 July 2011:
F-16. 6623.
455th Composite Wing, ROCAF, based at Chia Yi AB.
Instead of landing on runway, landed on "taxiway", sped pass the SAR squadron heloes, and stopped.
Pilot was Major General XU Jian San (52). 455th Composite Wing commander.
Despite his age, he insists on keep flying a F-16, instead of a desk.
On this day, three other F-16s also landed this way.
On 27 July 2011, ROCAF clarified this was a scheduled landing on a "secondary runway", and all pilots did this training once per three months. A secondary runway is as long and as well-equipped as a primary runway, but narrower.

| I've seen pictures and video during the cold war of planes doing the same thing on the autobahn. I wonder how much quicker those Vipers would get off the ground if they had -229 engines in them. |
