Well, the whole point would be to deliver a small number of commando's at a distances and in a Stealthy Package. Sorry, but the V-22 is about as Stealthy as a "Barn"!
The lads better bring good shoes and plenty of supplies for that "distant" walk home
Why they would just be pick-up via another F-35B..........of course at a time and point of there choosing! |

Not that I'm against upgrading (WTF kind of mind do you have to have to think up hanging someone off a fighter weapons station, anyway!?!?!), but a little shameless self-promotion here:
Try an MC-130 (variant of your choosing)? Low level (250 feet), at night, in any weather, at 250+ KTS. Not screaming fast, but it'll go a bit farther than an F-35 will Or, do the same with MH-53's (so long as you get it done before '08 ), using the MC's to refuel them as needed. Ditto for the V-22- low level, and FAST, at night- getting gas from those MC's, again, as needed. This way you get your whole team on one-two airplanes, instead of 2-4, along with any equipment they need- boats, bikes, guns, etc. As much as people seem to hate the V-22, I think it is going to be a wonderfull aircraft, and will revolutionise the way SOF's work. They'll have to re-work some of their gear and supplies (Humvee's don't fit in the marine CV-22's, for example), but that is what happens with a brand new airplane. |

| the MH-53, MH-47, and MC-130 have been great platforms to insert special ops troops for years, just gotta know how. The thing w/ special ops (especially aviation) is that the collective we don't know half of what they do or how they do it. And it's best kept that way. |

The only thing with the Osprey is that it's insanely loud. I work at an FBO and we had one pull in a few weeks ago. It's no quieter than UH-60. One thing that the V-22 offers is the back bay door, but Ch-47's have that too. Keep in mind too, not all of the bugs have been completely worked out of the V-22. Another thing it offers is speed. But, you would think anyway, if you had to get somewhere fast, and dismount quickly, something like an MD-500 or an OH-6 with side bench mounts would be more suitable. If you've seen the movie "Black Hawk Down," that's what the movie shows Delta using. They call it a "Little Bird."
I really don't think that the 35 would be a good sustitute for copters. They're loud, and only stealth when they're further away. To get behind enemy lines, I'm sure something would pick them up. Besides, groups such as the SeALs and delta have been getting along just fine using boats and helicopters. I think alot of SF guys would prefer a copter over a Vomit Comet anyway. |

I saw a V-22 do a high speed pass at Nellis in November and it was the quietest thing I've seen in a long time. I can understand it being somewhat relatively loud on the ground - it's a turboprop . Wait till you see one go fast down low ! |

| Perhaps...all I really know is, it was on the other side of the hangar, and I could hear it in the office.Personally, I'm a big fan of the Osprey, I just don't think it's the best means of ingress for a stealthy mission. |

Those would be good up to about 150 KIAS or so, probably (much) less with people hanging off the sides on benches. The V-22 is good for 200+. The OH-6 is a kick-a$$ little bird, but built for a different role altogether. |

Just keep it low and fast - they can't see ya if you're below the ridges and trees ! |
