I'm a newb but how long does it take for the gun cover to open?
If you're in a dogfight, wouldn't it be frustrating if you had to wait for the gun cover to open?
Same with the weapon bays. How long would it take to open the bay and fire an AMRAAM or Sidewinder
Thank you |

| Last I had heard, it was a minimum of 42 seconds and that was dependent on how fast the pilot could pour the extra hydraulic fluid needed into the cockpit pump receptacle. |

Might be even longer if the pilot forgets to unscrew the top of the CPR before takeoff

I'm sure it is fast enough not to worry about. |

It also fires as fast as the pilot can crank the handle |

| I remember a video including some gun firing trials footage and the cover open very quickly. The weapon bays open relativ fast as well, 2 sec max. |

I thought it had one of those door release lever thingies like the one that pops the gas tank fill port door on some cars... |

NO! NO! NO! You've all got it wrong! Don't you remember? The Aliens at Area 51 e-mail a signal to the gun door, and THAT opens it up. It's so fast, though, that the pilot doesn't even know it, until the gun starts to fire!

| Sorry guys, new UN security council resolution just passed: UNSCR4322: "Let it be known that from now on, all said doors must be fully open from moment of takeoff, out of fairness to those who may not have such doors." |

As long as the time to open is less than the time to spin up the gun, I'm fine with however long it takes.
All the door opening I've seen on video, both weapons firing and airshow demo passes show the doors opening or closing in lass than a second, so in a dogfight situation, there shouldn't be any delay caused by opening doors. Remember, if a Raptor pilot is dogfighting, chances are he's out of missiles or seriously screwed up. Either way, it's better to extend and come back again later than try to Richthofen an aware enemy.
Aerial combat from a US perspective is turning into aerial assassination, not hand to hand knife fighting. |

| Does the gun also come up with the door, or is the gun positioned so that when the door opens, it has a clean shot? |
