| I live near Williams Gateway airport in Mesa, Arizona. Recently, I have seen a F-104 flying in the air near the airport on several different occasions. It appeared to be doing touch & gos. Usually on a Sunday evening around 6:00. It would make 3 or 4 circuits then land. I am certain it's a F-104 as one time it flew directly over my car as i was driving. Could it be privately owned? Gateway used to be an airforce base and still conducts military training, could this plane somehow still be in service? |

maxcady,
I see you're new here - WELCOME ABOARD !!!
I believe I've heard of a privately owned F-104 down in your neck of the woods, so that's probably what you've seen . The last ones to fly in military service were in Italy and were just retired in 2004 IIRC.
Have fun and enjoy the sounds - Zippers make a lovely howl at certain power settings ! |

Thanks!
Yes, I noticed it made a very distinctive sound, unlike any modern fighter i have heard. If this is someone's personal craft, it must cost mega $$ to keep running! |

| The owner is a friend of mine. It's a two-seater, Canadian CF-104. He's had it about 10+ years, and works very hard to keep it flying. Neat guy. |

| Awesome aircraft. My favorite jet design. Those small thin wings and long sharp pencil like body makes it look so futuristic. |
