Hello
Took this image off http://www.aviation.idv.tw (you won't be able to see them if I direct link it; you'll need to log in)
This is the first image I've seen of ROCAF F-16s carrying AMRAAMs. I suppose the PLAAF growth has been enough of an incentive for the US to allow shipments of AIM-120s to the Island.
Neat stuff!
Cheers. |

That is possible. Another possibility is that this picture was taken outside Taiwan. In the US maybe, for training or testing so the taiwanese know how to use them when the sh*t hits the fan....
Take also a look at the AN/ALQ-184 jammer on No.5 station. There are not many countries useing that one... |

The image was taken in Taiwan. AIM-120s began shipments to the Island back in November 2003 (see F-16.net article "<a href="f-16_news_article905.html">AMRAAMs delivered to Taiwan</a>"). It is also why a lot of the ROCAF F-16s in Taiwan have the LAU-129 launchers installed instead of the -114 on the wingtip stations.
And yes, ROCAF uses AN/ALQ-184 . . . they have been since their initial operational status with the Air Force.
Cheers,
John |

US plans to sell Taiwan 443 missiles to boost island's defence
Thu, 01 Mar 2007 12:10:00 GMT | Author : DPA
Taipei - The United States is considering selling some 443 missiles, worth 421 million US dollars, to Taiwan to boost the island's defences against China, Taiwan press reports said Thursday.
Taiwan's representative office in the US has requested a possible sale of 218 AIM-120C-7 Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAMs), 235 AGM-65G2 Maverick Missiles, along with associated equipment, support and technical assistance, CNA quoed a DSCA statement as saying.
Taiwan bought 150 F16 jets from the US in the 1990s. The sale of AMRAAM and Maverick missiles is to augment and complement Taiwan's F16 fleet, which uses these two kinds of missiles.
Meanwhile, Taiwan is also seeking to buy 66 F16C/D warplanes to fill the gap in air defence from now until Taiwan has introduced its third-generation warplanes.

| This isn't "new", just not very well known, unless you're around them regularly. |

Fill the gap? They're using F-16's which are 4th gen fighters before they introduce their 3rd gen fighters? Doesn't make sense. Maybe a typo. |

Yes they do. Actually they have more R-77s than the Russians. They are used on the Su-30 MKK and MKK2, probably older Su-27SK/UB are also retrofitted to carry them.
As for the indigenous PL-12/SD-10 it is rumored that its seeker is a copy of that from R-77. |

Not new indeed. On Tuesday September 21st 2004, two RoCAF F-16 block 20 aircraft took off from Hualien AB for their first training flight with the missiles. But before that, Taiwanese pilots could already train with the missiles in the US.
Also note this article, posted today: <a href="news_article2213.html">US approves sale of AMRAAM and Maverick missiles to Taiwan</a>
Note that we have quite a few of RoCaf F-16s with AMRAAMs in the <a href="gallery_item44349.html">F-16.net photo gallery</a>.
Example:
RoCAF F-16A block 20 #6609 is ready for landing with its gears down at Chia-Yi AFB on July 6th, 2006. |

Hello everybody
This my first time speak on this web
I form twiwan and I study at SJSU
I think Taiwan should buy more AMRAAM
Because the information I have read that Taiwan only have 120 AIM-120C5
and 218 AIM-120C7(Not at Taiwan yeat).
Those photo the missile on the ROCAF F-16 should be AIM-120C5.
And I still improve my English.
I wish I can talking about F-16 with you everyone
and prtice English.Thank you^ ^ |

Lovenurse,
Nee hau ma! Welcome to the F-16.net forum. Don't worry about your English, it is easy to understand you. I lived in Taichung for 7 years, working on IDF program. I always enjoy talking to Taiwan people.
