There was an article posted today about Astronics winning a contract to install Night Vision conversions to RoKAF F-16s:
Quote:
During the period 1999 through 2002, over 1,100 U.S. F-16 Fighting Falcons were converted with Astronics' lighting systems to allow for the use of night vision goggles in the aircraft.
Astronics' lighting system conversion is designed to reduce the emission of infra red energy from the cockpit panel and the exterior lights during flight to minimize interference with the night vision goggles worn by the aircraft crew.
I thought I'd post a couple of pics of the exterior lights, these on a Block 52 F-16C. On the rear of the fairing for the position lights on the inlets are two small IR emitters: |

| Yup. Once you introduce NVG. The whole jet has to be NVG friendly including the cockpit. |

elp is right. I posted these so us ground-dwelling spotters could recognize a bird that had been NVG-modded. |

Thanks habu2! That is very nice. I would have passed it and not knowing what it is. Is that unique to Astronics' lighting systems?
cheers, |

| I got the impression from the article that Astronics was the only company/supplier for the conversion on USAF F-16s, so that is the only type you are likely to see. The IR emitters are only visible to NVGs so the formation can fly 'blacked out' yet still 'see' each other. Its not that simple of course but for this forum that is all that needs to be said. |

| I am late to this thread, but I am somewhat confused. We awarded LSI of Buffalo NY the contract to mod the fleet. (I managed that program briefly until I hired a new Program manager) Were they bought out by Astronics? |

Hmmm, imagine what you find on Google. LSI is a subsidiary of Astronics.
It's poor tast to answer your own posts |

| The other obvious indicator that the Jet has been modified is the upper wing tip light has a screw through the center. Also during hours of darkness the flood lights have a green look to them. In the cockpit all the lighting is green, and there are little "snorkle" lights to iluminate some of the gauges. When you look at the landing gear handle it is half yellow with the bulbs visible through the trasparent plastic. |

| The Red position light also should have a faceted filter assembly mounted to the red lens, generally refered to as a "birdcage filter". |

| Both upper wing tips have the "bird cage" as does the left inlet light. |
