Is it common for a flight lead to communicate speed changes by making calls such as "make speed 400 knots"/"set rpm to 90%", or would this be solely the wingman's responsibility to figure out himself either by visual cues (lead's jet is getting smaller so I should probably speed up) or with radar assistance? Perhaps such details would be, to a certain extent, covered in the briefing beforehand?

| Generally its left to the wingy to stay in formation. However, if you are operating in a 4-ship you might through out a reference airspeed or heading for 3/4 who are in 1nm trail. Typically this occurs on a DCA commit from the CAP. You want to make sure everyone is flowing the right direction. Otherwise, just stay in formation. NVG op's is a totally different story. Any significant heading or airspeed changes are made over the radio because you have very limited depth perception under NVG's. Generally you want to avoid using your radar to lock up friendly's so that's usually out the window. The key parts of the mission will probably be briefed though. For example, we'll CAP at xxx knots and push at yyy knots. That's usually the extent of it. |
