But anyway... how about that T-22? Anyone come up with nicknames now that it's in service? One comes to mind... starts with a "C"... rhymes with Raptor?
T-22? Yep not a typo. Still training, not fighting anything.

See... the thread is taking on a life of it's own. But back to nicknames. The unofficial ones like Rhino, Warthog, F-One-a-Lemon and ......Viper (hush falls over the crowd).
Any you Raptor boys have any pet names yet?

I think I've got a good one for the Raptor !
Back in WWII the Japanese nickname for the F4U Corsair (Bent Wing Bird) was "Whistling Death" due to the whistling sound made by the air going through the oil coolers in the wings.
Well, since you'll probably never see or hear the Raptor that kills you, "Whispering Death" sounds suitably fitting and ominous .
I'm a pretty big Raptor fan myself, but I still couldn't help but think about the computers in the jet when they had that little "glitch" on the way to Japan and back in December of '04 when one of 'em departed controlled flight on takeoff from Nellis. Microsoft always calls the next version of Windows in development "Windows Longhorn." I think "Longhorn" would suit the Raptor quite well considering the computer glitches, at least until the teething problems are overcome .
And here's some oldies but goodies .
A-6 Intruder - Flying Drumstick
F-14 Tomcat - Turkey
A-4 Skyhawk - Tinker Toy, Scooter
F-105 Thunderchief- Lead Sled, Thud
SR-71 Blackbird - Habu, The Sled
F-104 Starfighter - Missile with a man in it, Bullets and Blades (wing leading edges no sierra sharp as knives), Zipper
B-52 Stratofortress - B.U.F.F. - Big Ugly Fat Fellow
B-1 Lancer - Bone (B-ONE)
A-7 Corsair - S.L.U.F. - Short Little Ugly Fellow, Sewer Pipe
A-10 Thunderbolt II - Warthog
F-117 Nighthawk - Black Jet, Stinkbug
F-15 Eagle - Flying Tennis Court
F-4 Phantom - Rhino, Double Ugly
MiG 15 - Fagot (actual NATO codename) |

U-2: The Deuce, The Article, Dragon Lady (from Terry and the Pirates), Homesick Angel (not used much).
SR-71: back "in the day", when the U-2 and SR guys had a fun rivalry, I'm told the U-2 guys called the SR "the whistling s@#%house". No offense to any of you SR lovers (me included).
F-101: Voodoo
A-37: Dragonfly
T-37: Tweet, 6000-pound dog whistle.
T-1: TONE, (sort of like the B-1 "BONE").
T-6: it's the Texan II, but I remember back around '94 or so when they were considering some pretty bad names for it. There were 3 in particular, of which I can remember "Manatee". YGBSM! If I can remember the rest later, I'll edit this post. |

Actually the F-111 picked up that nickname during Vietnam because you did'nt hear the aircraft until after the bombs exploded.. They came in low and fast. |
