The article says "SNIPER" but since this is an export deal shouldn't this say "PANTERA"? ( export version of SNIPER ).
Quote:
Lockheed Martin Missile and Fire Control in Orlando, FL received a $54.6 million firm-fixed-price contract to provide for 22 Sniper targeting pods and associated support for foreign military sales requirements to Pakistan. At this time, $27.3 million have been obligated. Solicitations began March 2007, negotiations were complete April 2007, and work will be complete December 2010. The Headquarters 542d Combat Sustainment Wing, Robins Air Force Base, GA issued the contract (FA8539-07-C-0009). In its DSCA-anounced requests, Pakistan had requested the pods as a component of its $1.3 billion buy of 60 requested F-16A/B Mid-Life Update (MLU) modification and Falcon Star Structural Service Life Enhancement kits.

Pantera was the offical designation of the export version of the Sniper XR, however it has been dropped and they are all refered to as Sniper now |

Well, for some reason an earlier post of mine was taken down regarding my concern with selling advanced military equipment to Pakistan, and despite similar concernts being raised regarding the prospective sale of the F-22 to countries such as Japan, Australia and especially Israel, with many remarks regarding the reliability of the latter bordering on the insulting and offensive. Be that as it may, I'll let the referenced article speak for itself:
Quote:
Despite the deteriorating security situation in Pakistan, which include an active insurgency, large stretches of the country under de facto al Qaeda rule, visible weakness on the part of Pakistan's leadership within Islamabad itself, and close ties to China; the transfer of advanced US military technology, from F-16 C/Ds to Advanced Hawkeye AWACS radars, to the USA's most modern targeting pods, continues apace.

Your original post was removed because
1. We don't want a flame war or this topic to go down the wrong route.
2. You insinuated it was a country you were likely to go to war with [future]. Unlikely & the comments in the above 'quote' are factually incorrect in some respects.
Large stretches of Pakistan's countryside are not in the hands of Al-Qaeda. Has the above author of the article referenced been there? Not likely! |

That's what I'm talking about! I mean, if folks like you know better, then you can clear up the disinformation. That's often why we have these "discussions," so that the informed may educate the uninformed and then we're all the better for it. What would be your assessment of the claims made in that first paragraph of the article. Obviously you think differently. |

Thank you Boman. Now I know.
Obviously the potential Heavy Metal reference had to be avoided so as not to make the SNIPER program look bad. |
