I was just reading a newbie thread asking for advice on the USAFA. I got me thinking. I washed out of Doolie Summer, class of 1980. I wasn't in shape and the altitude killed me.
Ring Knockers stand up! Gums, I believe you're senior.

Maddog, that must have been an interesting summer to be on the hill, following up LCWB...
Can't let this one go, though:

First, the Academy admissions office will not correspond with candidates before 1 January of their 11th Grade year.
Second, the Academy does not "offer slots." Your congressman might have offered a nomination (doubtful that early since he would have to project how many cadets he would actively have nominated three years in advance), but that is only 50% of an appointment. You would still have to be admitted by the Academy, which happens February through June of your 12th grade year.
Third, I learned a long time ago that "I could've gone to the Academy, but..." stories are rarely good for more than a good laugh. Zoomies, how many stories have you heard over the years that start with that phrase?!?
Be proud of where you're from, whether it's the Academy, a civilian college, or a good HS!
By the way, I could've gone to Harvard Medical School, but I wanted to be a fighter pilot so I turned them down. And my grades sucked. And I had the wrong major. And I never took the entrance exam.

Baja,
Not all nominations come from congressman Presidential, Children of Deceased or Disabled Veterans, Military or Civilian Personnel in a Missing Status, or Children of Medal of Honor Recipients categories are managed and appointed by USAFA. I got a Presidential nomination but did not received an appointment. Instead got offered the Prep school and decided I didn't want the 5-year plan and went to the oldest private military school in the country. |

Understand, Jammer. Nominating source does not change the argument, but it is a good addition for those that are not "in the know."

Was asked then. Wasn't interested. Step dads step mom was friends with most of the congressmen from Ohio.
Going off what I was told, not trying to be some ringknocker expert. Never looked into it. Didn't really care to be honest about it. |

Thanks for clearing it up, cutlass. I responded to a snide comment with several snide comments--sorry if it was a bit harsh.
Scott--the short story is I left the Kun in the winter (kicking and screaming, I might add--best assignment of my career) for the inevitable desk job associated with being a field grader. Hope to be back to the jet in a couple of years.
Off topic. Sorry.
Any more Zoombags out there? |
