Hello all,
I sought some assistance some time ago regarding detailing my new toy, and thanks to those who helped. I also anticipated a slow build, and boy was I right!
Learning a lot about PE parts, detail painting, masking, and airbrushing - all first attempts. As such I also expected a few hiccups along the way.
Most infuriating of these has been the canopy. After applying a couple of coats of Micro Mask Liquid Masking Solution, meticulously trimming the framework, stuffing it up and doing it all again, I came to spray the model with the canopy in place to get even colour distribution. On removing the liquid mask, I found that some spray had still got past the mask and had slightly tarnished the clear plastic. Then, a few days later, a drop of thinners splashed onto the canopy, causing the crazed appearance in the photos.
I have read what I can find on modelling sites about repairing clear parts, and am seeking some more advice. Please keep in mind that Future isn't available in Australia, and the 'equivalent product' is going to be awfully expensive for me to order from the other side of the country. Apart from plastic polish gradually filling in the rough surface (Turtle Wax is best, aparently), does anyone have any proven solutions? And any ideas for removing some thin enamel paint without causing more damage?
Or, as a last resort, a spare 1/48 canopy to suit a Hasegawa CJ they are willing to sell?
Thanks,
James |

Automotive polishing products can be used as well, so can toothpaste and denim!
FWIW all the single-seat Hasegawa canopies (A/C/CG/CJ) are identical in shape, and many came with two canopies in the kit. You might try posting in the ARC forums and asking if any fellow Aussie modelers have a spare. |

LOL, I sold all my Hasegawa Cs whe I heard about the Tamiya, but there are a ton of them floating around like Greg said...post on ARC and ask....somebody has one, or alternately, send a mail to
parts@hlj.com and see about buying one....shouldn't be much at all. |

Forgive a newbie his [Link pending approval]
And for what it is worth, full marks for the crack about the bird control. The way this thing is going I may model the beast into a hangar queen and be done with it! |

Take a very fine grade of automative laquercleaner, or that Tellsell stuff for speedboats and campers from polyester.
Prop up the inside of the canopy with supportive material, like playdoh, cause the rubbing od polishing will create heat and tensions in the material, and you run the risk of cracking it.
Make sure no pressure is on the canopy other than that from the polishing action. Rinse regularly.
You can also decide to turn it into the goldplated canopy, by using a wood varnish like oak or teak.
Otherwise just say it's splatter from the bold eagle who had's it's nest in the top of the hangar.
Or have a go at Ebay for a spare kit..
BTW I know how you feel, I've wasted a fortune on designer jeans where the superglue ended upon my trousers, in an effort to keep the canopies clean.. |
