You know modern jets aren’t fun anymore, you change engines and idle leak and ops is all you get.
Back in the day at RAF Upper Heyford (F-111E/TF30 P-3’s) we had some unique problems. One of them was the AB fuel control let loose somewhere down the line. You snap to mil and everything is cool. Go into zone 1 and everything is still cool. Go into zone 2,3,4 and then 5 and then sh*t happens. After cooking in zone 5 for about 30 seconds all hell breaks loose … nozzle full open and fuel flow rapidly jumps from 34000 pph to 70,000pph, ground shakes, jet makes funny noise and you immediately snap back to MIL. Everything stabilizes and your ground troop who happens to be an engine groupie tells you to do it again. Same thing … your in zone 5 stabilized for 30 seconds and boom … fuel flow runs away with noticeable engine performance. By then QA and flight safety, and even the DCM are pulling up in your area, so you scavenge and shut down. People start to say they thought the space shuttle was taking off.
The cool thing about F-111s is you did not have to tie them down for a hi-power run on the ramp
We (I should say engine groupies) changed AB fuel control and all was well. F-16 almost tells you what's wrong. completely different now compared to the 80-90's |

| Wow! Yeah, engines are just to smart theses days. If the aug fuel control ever takes a dump, the big brain just tells disable it. So no fun. The only way you get a mass amount of extra fuel flow is if a line broke. But it would be inside the engine like it should be!!! |

Unless one of the augmentor supply manifolds or pad seals are leaking OUTSIDE the duct...
Then again even if the fuel is leaking INTO the augmentor, you stand a very good chance of a burn-through. (AKA - Cracked spray manifold)
Neither situation is good.
Our "new" computer controlled engines still can't change parts or figure out ALL the problems. They only have very specific programing for very specific problems.

Nothing beats an old "Engine Troop" with about 15 years of motor learnin'

True. I hear ya on that note. The computers and the engine monitoring sofeware been around for a while and still full of glitches and problems.
