We've seen some of these before, but the way they came in an email had me ! I hope you like the captions I added to the pics .
Here's hoping they don't go this far !!!!!
Don't show these around Capitol Hill - they might take 'em seriously ! |

The scariest part, is that the dude on the Warthog is carrying an M-16A1. It's quite time they upgraded. |

TC,
Nice catch on the rifle !
No, they aren't about to upgrade - taking the M-16A1s out of storage and using them in this roll will save even more money on procurement . Just think of how many we have in storage from the cold war ! |

Yeah, I was about to say that looks more like an A2 than A1. I've never held any other version of the rifle than those two though. |

OK, I'll admit that you guys are better with the rifles . Us civilians don't get to play with 'em too much.
Thanks for the corrections ! |

Ok, gotcha. Good call Check! I just took a closer look, and the upper looks more cylindrical (A2 style) than triangular (ala, the A1). A scary thought, however: I have a buddy who went to K2 during OEF, with an AFRC unit, and they still had A1s that they were distributing to the aircrew when they were on the ground!
If certain people in Washington get their way, we'll be shooting pea shooters and slingshots in the desert. |

| good thing about the A1s though is that they can go on full auto instead of burst. I mean, there's not much use for full auto, but it's fun to shoot that way. |

You can pull the burst limiter out of A2s. I've known of some...er..."enthusiats" who could do the "conversion". Not exactly legal, but it can be done. I'll leave it at that before I lose my security clearance.
All full auto does is waste your ammo, lower your accuracy, and make your weapon more jam-prone. Other than that Mrs. Kennedy, how was Dallas? |

| yeah, definitely no real good use for full auto, but it is more fun to fire than burst. As for mods, another cadet I knew had a M-4 that he modified to go full auto. |

Back in Desert Storm, when we deployed from TJ to Doha we were all issued 'brand new' A1'a still in the factory wrappings along with the 1969 printed, Army issued "M16A1 Rifle. Operation and Preventive Maintenance", illustrated by Will Eisner. Yes, I learned everything I ever needed to know about "Shooting gooks" (that's a direct quote) from a comic book.
Prior to the war we had a "Law's of War" breifing:
Speaking of shooting, up next was our weapons briefer. He gave us a good background and history of our M-16 rifles. From the time that they’d come into service in the 1960’s there had been countless improvements made in both the weapons safety and operation. Although they looked similar, the modern day M-16 was only a distant relative of the rifle which began its service in Southeast Asia. The current M-16 was among the very best combat rifles in existance. But that, all of those years of improvements, wouldn’t help us. We were issued factory fresh M-16A1’s. Mine was marked 1968, the year I was born. Well, they’d look good with our old ‘steel-pot’ helmets…
”Because you guys don’t have the option of a three-round burst (only single shot or full automatic) I definatly recommend only shooting in semi-automatic. In full auto, you’re not going to hit anything…”
Still, I can imagine all of us on the flightline opening up at once as the Iraqis came ‘over the wall’. We might not hit anything, but the noise itself would probably have scared them away.
Note how effective that woodland camo is...

Hey Mike, I notice in your pics from ODS, that you, Stutler, and some of the others are wearing standard BDUs. Did you guys not receive "Chocolate Chips" during the war?
Geez, a pi$$ pot and an A1, with no body armor. That'd be about my d@mn luck. |
