BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) -- A U.S. Air Force jet carrying one pilot crashed in Iraq on Monday, the military said.
The F-16CG was supporting coalition ground forces when it went down about 1:35 p.m., about 20 miles (32 kilometers) northwest of Baghdad in Anbar province, the military said in a brief statement that contained no information about the cause of the crash or the fate of the pilot.
Mohammed Al-Obeidi, an Iraqi who lives in the nearby town of Karmah, said he saw the jet flying up and down erratically before it nose-dived and exploded in a farm field.
He said other U.S. warplanes rushed to the crash site and were circling around it.

I just read the artcile. They said the jet was flying up and down erratically before it crashed.. FLCS failure after small arms fire? kinda reminds me of what happened to the F-22 prototype right after takeoff.
PS: It's gotta be one of the following jets from the 524th (from JJ's balad deployment thread)
88-0549 (Block 40D)
89-2005 (Block 40E)
89-2054 (Block 40E)
89-2125 (Block 40G)
I hope the pilot is ok! |

As reported by Aljazeera. Will wait for the official confirmation on the shoot down comments
Aljazeera wrote:
US F-16 goes down in Iraq
A US F-16 fighter aircraft has gone down near the city of Fallujah in western Iraq.
The US airforce said the plane's pilot was missing and an investigation into the cause of the incident had been launched.
However, and Iraqi journalist said local residents had reported seeing the F-16 being shot down.
Muthana Shakir, an Iraqi journalist in Baghdad told Al Jazeera: "We got credible news saying at 2pm on Monday a US F-16 warplane was downed in al-Garma neighbourhood near the western Iraqi city of Falluja."
"The warplane was downed over arable lands. Witnesses confirmed that the plane was fired on by gunmen's rockets when it was flying on low altitude."
William Caldwell, a US military spokesman, said he would be surprised if the jet was shot down as the F-16's fly very fast and have not encountered any weapons capable of taking them down in Iraq.
A spokesman said that the aircraft was lost while it was flying in support of ground operations taking place in Fallujah.
US troops are reported to have surrounded the crash-site.

Disturbing news as reported by Reuters:
Reuters wrote:
A local journalist who shot film of the wreckage of the plane after it came down north of Falluja in Iraq's western Anbar province said he was in no doubt the pilot was dead.
The film showed the bloodied and motionless body of what appeared to be a man in a flight suit wearing a parachute harness lying in a field strewn with the wreckage of the plane.

Sorry to hear about the pilot.
I was the crew chief on 89-2054 when it was the squadron bird for the 307th at Homestead and Moody.

| CNN is reporting that the F-16 crashed while strafing a ground target, and the pilot didn't have time to eject. Awful news |
