No offense, but I don't know about Phoenix as a name, at least not now. The US Navy still has a few AIM-54s in service with the Tomcat. If I heard someone say they were a Phoenix driver, I'd picture some poor soul cooped up in a missile screaming their lungs out at high mach bound for a certain collision with an enemy aircraft. Heroic, but not quite how I picture our fine pilots. Just my 2 cents.
I like Cyclone and Tsunami for the weather aspects.
As for the supernatural, how about the F-35 Reaper or the F-35 Wraith? Both are really spooky and sound cool, too! The Brits should like Reaper, as they once had a carrier with the same name.
If we're going down the bird path, why not the Hawk or Harris Hawk? Harris Hawks even hunt in teams.
It's tough trying to come up with names that haven't been used!
I do have to give SwedgeII credit for the F-35 Super Hamster! The thought of a small rodent in full flight gear sitting in the cockpit with the Hamster Dance music playing at the roll out had me laughing so hard I almost cried! I'd love to see a picture of that! LOL! |

| How many snake names for aircraft have been used, besides the 16 getting the nickname Viper? I kinda like something like Cobra, or maybe the Asp. Asp could even become an acronym name for the 35. Aircraft Strike Platform, or something like that. |

Hmmm what about "Black Widow"? LOL..ok so I'm biased due to the squadron i'm in..hehe..Had to throw that in there
'Course the YF-23 I think it was. The jet that was competin with the F-22 wich of course didn't make the cut was named the Black Widow. And that thing looked wicked!
Couldn't figure out how to do the whole post a pic thing..so I figured the link to the page ought to work... http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ac/f-23.htm |

Actually "Black Widow" should be "Black Widow II", because of the Northrop P-61 Black Widow, a big two-engined night fighter that flew during the WWII. |

hmm... I can't keep my mouth shut about this one...
Chicken Hawk (remember the chicken hawk in the old bugs bunny cartoons? the little badass a$$ kicker who always went after the large rooster and the dumb dog?)
Griffon
Camel (in order to revive WW1 names!)
but my favourite will always be.... F-35 Penguin (simply because penguins are... everywhere!!! They run everything!!) |

| Which penguins do you mean? The Norwegian Anti Shipping missile used on RNoAF Vipers and USN helicopters or the ones that only exists at the Antarctica and that can’t fly? |

Tsunami is a Japanese name for the tidal wave caused by an under water earth quake, so it is not exactly a weather phenomena.
How about F-35 Storm? I don?t know of any planes with that name, and it does meet the need for a weather related name, while also being a word used in military terms as in storming a fortress. There will also be a lot of them so it may feel like a storm when they swarm all over you. |

I know you guys are talking about the F-35 here, but doesn't anyone here besides me think that "Fighting Falcon" is a stupid name? I know GD would have just called it "Falcon" hadn't some other aircraft been called that. But still people usually refer to it as "Falcon" or good ol' "Viper." And personally I think the JSF should be name after a knife too! |

| After reading lamoey's post, I checked it all as I felt it was strange that Storm had not been used before. As he said, I could not find any in the military aviation history. I can't figure why because it seems to me that it's a good name, what do you think of it? |
