So, what are the current estimated costs for the A,B,C variants?
Everyone keeps whining about the massively increasing program costs... So I wanna see if there is any fire to this smoke.
The unit cost of each F-35 currently estimated at:-
F-35A -- $45 million (2004 dollars, L-M) to $48.5 million (2005 dollars, GAO)
F-35B/C -- $58 million (2004 dollars, L-M) to $61 million (2005 dollars GAO)
Conventional wisdom says that L-M tend to understate their unit cost numbers, whereas the GAO tend to overstate it.
The original estimates were:-
F-35A - $28 million (1994 dollars @ program initiation; ~ $39 million in 2004 dollars using a 3% constant annual inflation).
F-35/B/C $35 million (1994 dollars @ program initiation; ~ $48 million in 2004 dollars using a 3% constant annual inflation).
In 2005 the total program cost (not in constant year dollars) was adjusted upwards by about 23% by the GAO. This is overwhelmingly due to the revised inflation projections for the next 30 years, and not because the program is currently spending more money.
The cost growth of the F-35 program in constant year dollars is actually very good. Better than ANY western fighter in recent history. |
