Hi all, I got two questions about "Emergency Manual chute" on a right side of the F-16 cockpit.

1. What is it for?

2. Why is this handle safety pinned on Israeli F-16 Block 40 "Barak" and not pinned on the F-16I?

Thanks,

Yasha,

Check out this page from my site,ACES II Technical Information, it has a description of the seat including that handle, and there is a photo of it and the earlier Restraint Emergency Release version that I have on my seat. The Emergency Manual Chute handle was changed by what is called the '540 mod' to the seat and added an extra mortar charge to fire off the main recovery parachute if the occupant believed the seat automatics had failed and the seat was too low. Scott O'Grady, used his EMC handle during his ejection because he was falling thru clouds and was unsure of the altitude. He was concerned that the seat was damaged due to the missile impact and the flash fire in the cockpit so he didn't take any chances.

Thank you all!
