That is a flat-out guess. They just signed a deal for 500 Mi-26 helicopters. Can you say invasion airlift of Taiwan? |

I have to admit that I've always thought the Raptor was overkill however, being on this site has changed my mind (a little). My question is; when the F15 and F16 were being developed, were there discussions about whether or not such an advanced aircraft was needed?
Trust me, "overkill" is a very very good thing to have in A2A missions. And also remember, that the other guys on the other side of the world don't publish their weapons systems in Popular Science in order for a civilian to make that kind of statement. (I don't that you're civilian or not) Whether or not the F-22 is overkill against a fully capable foe remains to be seen and may never (hopefully) ever be found out. Hopefully Raptors will never find themselves flying into "Russian" or Chinese airspace in anger. As much I hate what the ATF got turned into, she's still a fine aircraft, and if she is overkill, then thank god and thank the generals that managed the program. |

P.S It really pi$$e$ me off when I hear our elected officials bashing a weapons system because it is "overkill". My god, the stupidity of our leaders is quite remarkable at times. A friend of mine who is a retired 1* from the AF and I both agree that it has been divine intervention that has kept the US "safe and sound" from the Rev. War all the way through what we're facing now. Sorry for the sidetrack. |

The RAF has an ageing fleet of old Tornado and Jaguar fighters, these are ancient and need replacement
And what exactly would the USAF have right now without the F-22? An aging fleet of F-15s and F-16s. The argument of it being too much would be valid oh, about 20 years ago when the ATF program was started. But the R&D has been done, the jet is in service and it does indeed dominate the field. I'm sorry if that offends you. Wait, no I'm not. |
