I took advantage of Force Shaping, now I'm in the Guard and couldn't be happier.

I agree the 22 and 35 are here to stay. The question is how many are we going to buy now while sacrificing people? If the pentagon has its way, we'll keep buying up the airframes and cut the people. If others have their way, we'll slow down the purchase of the jets and start beefing up the manpower.
McCain has been trying to limit the airpower purchases and he's on the Armed Services committee.
I personally think all the recent investigations and brainstorming are going to show the Army and Marines are not the only services that need people. Big Blue is stretched way too thin, in my opinion, and also needs more pink fleshy bodies.
The current questions from the new lawmakers are "why aren't we winning these wars?" I can certainly tell you the answer to that question is not, "Because we don't have enough F-22s or F-35s."

Does anyone know the proportion of officer & enlisted in the 40k that are getting booted? I think a lot are going to be officer, but this is just a speculation of the "Force Shaping" briefings I've had in AFROTC.

No but in my book, it is BS of the highest order, this so called 'dead weight discussion" is crap, many, many good folks were told to leave both back in 91 timeframe and now...now you are doing far more with less, where is the advantage in that?
I'll tell you what it is , it is people not using their heads in Washington and not thinking ahead to the real dangers, then it is just screwing over folks big time. I can tell you my wife did not deserve it, she fought well in Desert Storm, many 'scud attacks", loaded her backside off just (A-10's) just to be told to leave later..it is crap dudes, pure crap.
Not a way to maintain an effective military. Volunteer or not, it is bullcrap

Weren't they talking 'draft' just a year or two ago? I mean c'mon.... draft then force reduction!? I came INTO the AF in '91, and I watched a great many ppl get the boot. Where I was, when they offered the voluntary seperation we lost the 'backbone' of knowledge and experience... the E-5's.
We started having E-7's being DCC on aircraft. I was a lowly E-3 at the time so they weren't giving out DCC spots to us yet. I speak to a loader friend thats still in at Eilson. He says they are way under manned and need more flightline in general. Hell I'd go back if they would take me. Seems six years experience and yer A&P with a few years behind it also isn't what they need. Cutting dead weight is dead wrong. I had a close friend go in 92 and he was a 2nd LT. The guy fought to stay in but in theend lost out.

I know, sometimes the US government makes serious mistakes in judgment, again, this is one of them...problem is they never seem to learn from it...I hate politics - have a Merry Christmas

True that Meat....if I didn't have to take care of my two kids without their mom around you bet I'd be beating down doors to get in regardless of dow sizing. For now I'm stuck in nowhere northern Arizona wasting away. Now that brings to mind a good question....how many of us with drive, experience and knowledge are wasting away while they recruit newbies that they have to spend so much time and money on to train? Wouldn't it be more fiscally sound to take old dawgs that would need minor adjustment than new 18 yr old kids that know nuthin at all?

Yes..it would, I agree big time but man it has changed so much these days, too much nonsense with power struggles and such, it appears (the bigger picture) that the USAF is now farmed out to assist the US Army too. My USAF sons are also doing convoy duty, that beats all for me, such a waste of resources in my book and not what they came in for but I have no problem with them serving of course but be used by the US Army, that bothers me, again forced reductions caused this too...damn shame.
I wish you all the luck in the world finding good meaningful work, at times I feel I am still supporting the USAF effort but others times I think I am wasting my time because the lessons learned don't seem to apply anymore (folks just don't seem to care, I think it is burn out but far too many)...shameful.
My sons second tour in one year, now he is there for a years assignment...that is crap, the government should have planned better in my book...hard to stay focused when your pissed

If they're going to cut people, they would start cuttin' E-7s and above first, right? As an E-3, I have a clean record (knock on wood) and I'm a decent maintainer, so I guess I should be okay...it wouldn't surprise me if they deny my reenlistment, seeing as I only signed up for four years...better find the Guard liason, I guess...

The AF can also be included in the increase of troops though because AF pilots and navigators are apart of the war in Iraq.
