Just read over on the AF news site that the AF wants 40,000 people out over the next 3 years. Hope it doesn't get approved but it most likely will, they want the money for aircraft and equipment. It makes me want to puke.

This happened back in 1991 when people in the Air Force were given the early 15 year retirement option. We lost a lot of good Crew Chiefs that were feed-up with what was going on in the Air Force. The a few years latter Crew Chiefs were given large reinlistment bonuses to stay in. And lets not forget ever popular mega signing bonus. In 10 years this cycle will start all over again with more SRBs and more money to keep people to stay in with a less attractive retirement plan for thoughs people who will become carrer Airman.
You forgot about the SSI/SSB crap . Talk about getting bent over. My shop foreman was a FTD AGE instructor with 11 years in and they gave him 3 months to out. Thanks for all the hard work and dedication but please leave and do it quickly.

Its going to hapen. I was one of the first to be told to get out in this new round of cuts. Thank goodness I was able to find a back door to stay in the Air Force. Granted I'm now a traditional reservist, but my career will continue, and thats what is important to me. Plus, once the training for my new job is done I'll finally get to deploy, which is something I have wanted to do ever since I swore in over thre years ago.

Wow, thats the size of our entire Air force here in the UK Even for a force the size of the USAF that is a lot of manpower to lose.

All true, back in 92 my wife and I has been stationed in the UK, She has only been back from Iraq six months ,had a line number for Tech when she was told, she and several thousand other (462's) weapons loaders had to get out, she had no choice.
She was just about seven years from retirement when she had to leave, talk about pissed off and a big hardly thank you for service, it sucked big time, then and now. We are losing folks everywhere and the operational tempo has not changed, if anything, it is worse.
Out of 25 folks in our organization (XP) now at the depot, we are losing ten of them, two from earlier retirement. This more with less crap has got to stop, all suffer from it, the servicing organizations, the customers and the employees, not forgetting the USAF as a whole.
Politicians need to pull their collective heads out of their a$$ ad stop the rape of the military and her forces if we are to be a force to be reckoned with at all.

It's no longer called a "RIF": they've cleaned it the terminology and now call it "Force Shaping". Isn't that nicer?
We arent kicking any enlisted folks out that dont deserve the boot. A lot of "over manned" career field folks are being forced to cross train though. As long as you have a decent record you will still be allowed to reenlist. The next 10 years are going to be very interesting I think.

When drawdowns are massive you get primarily the better performers separating during the voluntary phase.
The losers tend to stay in until forced out.
Personally, I think invol separations should be treated like WAPS testing but in reverse. After getting rid of all the control roster types, target the slugs by combining EPR points, SKT/PFE scores, dec's, and the new fitness score and eliminate the lowest overall scores first regardless of AFSC or TIS/TIG.
You scored a 48 on your PFE and a 51 on your SKT? Congrats your getting out...instead of Congrats! You made Staff!

the "force shaping" is getting rid of all the dead weight... people holding a high time in grade, bad records, turning down orders, refusing to WAPS test, and things of that nature. after they get rid of these folks, it will get interesting to see where they take people from.

There are those in Congress that know the AF needs more, and definitely not less, people. They may just throw some extra money to the AF and end this silly force shaping.
Or maybe McCain can end the F22 / F35 lust and make the Air Force spend its money on aircraft we can actually use in the two wars we're currently engaged in.
At any rate, if you need a job in the Air Force, in the next several years you'll see major hiring.
I'm going to have to disagree with you on your theory. The people are gone and wont be coming back anytime soon. The 22 is here to stay along with the 35.
now i can see where they're coming from but i think it still kinda contradicts the fact that i just heard that the President wants to increase the total size of the military..

I believe he only want to increase the Army and Marines.
