Hello every one,
I was wondering if any of you know what T O states that we have to ware safety glasses when safety wiring. I know that we do but we are having an inspection this weekend and I cant seem to find it for the life of me.
Thank you! |

What you seek is not in a TO. TOs are specific to equipment (Engines, Aircraft, AGE, etc) What you're looking for is something Air Force wide. (Cops, medical, dining facility, CE, maintenance, military/civilians, etc)
AIR FORCE OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH STANDARD 91-501
Safety
AIR FORCE CONSOLIDATED OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY STANDARD
AFOSH STD 91-501 Paragraphs 14.5.1 & 14.5.2
Quote:
14.5.1. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). PPE will be used whenever there are hazards that can do bodily harm through absorption, inhalation, or physical contact. This equipment includes respiratory and protective devices, special clothing, and protective devices for the eyes, face, head, torso, and extremities. All PPE will be approved for the work performed and will be maintained in satisfactory condition. The installation ground safety and BE officials will be consulted. The BEE is responsible for initial training and fit testing for users of respiratory protection. Supervisors shall instruct personnel in the use and care of this equipment. Training will be documented according to AFI 91-301. (Refer to OSHA 29 CFR 1910.133, Eye and Face Protection). (Also refer to AFOSH Standards 48-137 and 48-20, Hearing Conservation Program.)
14.5.2. Eye and Face Protection. Employees will be provided and use the appropriate eye or face protection when exposed to hazards from flying particles, molten metal, liquid chemicals, corrosives, caustics, chemical gases, vapors, or ionizing and non-ionizing radiation. This requirement also applies to management, supervisors, and visitors while they are within the hazardous area. Selection will be based on the kind and degree of hazard present. NOTE: Whenever a task is above eye level and the worker must look up into the area being worked on, eye protection is required to protect against small particles of falling debris.
Note: This applies to almost any job using hand-tools if there is a chance of something hitting your eyes (Like bits of lockwire) especially if you are under your job where anything can fall or drip.
Note 2: Supervisors, Safety & QA should also be wearing PPE if they are in the 'hazard area' - but be tactful!
The section also states "Protective eye and face devices must comply with the ANSI Standard Z87.1, Practice for Occupational and Educational Eye and Face Protection." So if you're buying your own PPE (Be sure it's marked properly!) make sure it complies with this ANSI STD.

REF: http://www.osha.gov/pls/oshaweb/owadisp ... ;p_id=9778
For proper aircraft "Lockwire" techniques REF: TO 1-1A-8, Para 16.1.1 (or if you work PW engines specifically REF: TO 2-1-111 Section 25)
FYI, 1-1A-8 also states "WARNING Eye protection shall be worn while installing or removing safety wire/safety cable. Keep fingers away from jaws and cutting edge."
If you work maintenance on the flight line TO 1-1A-8 should be on your list of TOs in ETIMS; you can find a copy there. (If not see your TODO/TODA)
Now you can impress someone!
Keep 'em flyin'

Going to add my make sure the safety goggles/glasses your wearing are approved such as in the ANSI standard, usually Z87+. Our QA didnt know about it and when I was questioned on the ESS glasses I was wearing I had to show them where it stated they were authorized. And this may be an additional but when your dealing with liquid, where splashing COULD occure its RECOMMENDED that you wear a face shield. |
