Pilot safety: award of distinction
Combat Edge, March, 2005
On 10 Nov 04, Capt Christina Szasz was taking off on the third Surface Attack sortie of her initial F-117 qualification training at Holloman AFB, N.M.; only her seventh sortie in the aircraft.
At 150 feet above ground level, the left Bleed Duct Overheat light illuminated, along with the Master Caution light. Similar bleed duct leaks have resulted in the loss of two F-117s in the past, so the situation is treated very seriously and is a boldface procedure.
Capt Szasz applied the boldface, turning off the bleed duct switch associated with the light and went 100 percent oxygen on the regulator to avoid breathing possible smoke and fumes in the cockpit. She then maneuvered the jet away from populated areas and gained altitude while simultaneously dumping fuel to reduce gross weight for landing. The accompanying instructor pilot in the chase T-38 provided mutual support and backed up Capt Szasz with the F-117 checklist. Once on downwind, Capt Szasz referenced the Bleed Duct Leak checklist. The bleed duct overheat light had not extinguished when she turned off the switch; indicating a possible bleed air leak between the engine and the shutoff valve. This could mean the existence of high pressure air at 750[degrees] Fahrenheit burning through critical components in the engine bay which could quickly result in the loss of aircraft control. The checklist called for an engine shutdown and immediate landing.
Single engine flight is difficult in the F-117 due to thrust limitation, and the high density altitude at Holloman AFB. Following the checklist, Capt Szasz shut down the left engine and flew a perfect single engine approach and landing. When Capt Szasz activated the drag chute upon landing, she noted a distinct lack of immediate deceleration, indicating that the drag chute did not deploy. Realizing the need to slow the jet immediately, Capt Szasz quickly applied maximum braking, stopping the jet with just a thousand feet remaining.
Despite being very inexperienced in the F-117, Capt Szasz performed flawlessly in a worst-case scenario straight out of an emergency procedures evaluation, preventing further damage to the aircraft.

I assume (hope) those photos are not recent. That -CJ has a HARM loaded and there hasn't been a SAM threat in Iraq for three years and never was one in Afghanistan. Time to leave the "great white hope" at home and drop real iron like the block 30/40s.

A 117 pilot, eh? A beautiful woman in an ugly plane. Something is seriously wrong with this picture.
Then again, I once met a Hog driver who nearly caused TC a neck injury when he checked 6 to get another look at her.

Well guys,
I didn't know that the conversion from F-117 to F-16 was that short.
I saw her during the Hill AFB airshow in July flying a F-117.
I didn't have much time to talk to her but she seems to be nice.
That's all folks
Greets Henk
So I guess the guys are right that the pics are old even if you look at the numbers of the pictures it starts with 2002 so that will tell also. |

| Shaq was at Shaw when I was there. That is my buddy launching her out in the above pics. She is pretty cool and down to earth. One hell of a fighter pilot too!! Those pics were taken in Turkey during ONW/OIF. |

Crapitall, I should've seen that one coming! ZING!
But hey, if a girl can love a Warthog, then there is hope for TC. There is hope I say!
Actually, she transitioned from Vipers to 117s, not the other way around. She's currently at Holloman.

Probably the best USAF shots related to a complete U.S. female air crew in OEF combat, called "Ladies night over Afghanistan" in the headline.
In the next couple of days I will post some further images of female OIF/OEF pilots (at first related to F-16s and F-15Es). |

I think that I might have seen her while I was at Shaw, also. She was in the 78th (I think)? If that wasn't her, then they definitely had another hottie flying with them at that time.
As far as I've seen, most of the women fighter pilots out there are extremely nice, especially to maintainers. I've always enjoyed launch/recovery with one flying in my jet. And, at least in my experience, they are more than capable of saying that either they had a bad mission or that they screwed the pooch instead of trying to blame the jet/maintenance for something that's non-existence and will cause hours of work trying to track to down. Not that all male pilots do this, of course, but there are definitely some that are notorious among maintainers for doing this...
And another aside, we have a female (not sure if she's a pilot, but she is aircrew) from the ANG in a Tennessee C-130 unit TDY here right now. Besides being pregnant (and still flying!), she's good looking. And, from my conversation with her, she seems extremely cool and down to earth. Oh, and TC, she's married to a Hog pilot, if that helps... lol |
