Odd...I don't see any air refueling probes on them. Pretty sure they don't have that capability.

How can you be sure about a system that you obviously don't know anything about?
FYI, Gripen C/Ds have a RETRACTABLE IFR PROBE
you'll find lots of photos here:

| The JAS 39 C/D is more useful to exercise with than the JAS 39 A/B. The A/B models from the 2nd squadron of F17 Wing, Ronneby AB which joined the Dutch exercise 'Frisian Flag 2005, were lacking IFF Mode 1-4, Link 16 and AR probe. The (Swedish) C/D models are equipped with this. |

| What was the emphasis on the exercise? Were there any mock dogfights between the Gripens and the Vipers? |

They still have one more week to go but the general idea is to simulate a UN mission. For instance last week a 24 jet coalition of USA, Canada and Sweden escorted cargo planes and took out enemy aircraft and SAM sites in the process.
Other than that they haevn't mentioned anything specific other than that the Gripen's would be seen in all roles. |

Ended on Friday. The detachment commander, pilots, US and Swedish officials all seem happy and there's no word of any problems at all.
http://www.mil.se kept a diary of the event but it's not in English.. though type in Alaska in the search box for photos. It's been good fun reading the diary... US, Canadian, Swedish and Japanese forces don't often get to exercise together!
We also had army rangers from two regiments over there, doing FAC etc for A-10's, F-16, CF-18 and Gripens
Here's some pics in lo-q
This was the final exam for the new International SwAF JAS 39C/D division (previously 39A/B) so to speak demonstrating full operational capability 10,000 km from home. The gov declared them mission ready in July for international ops. Been 40 years since the airforce last entered combat. |
