Read on the home page of Twenthe's shut down. Kinda bummed me out. It was the first base I went to on my first project in Europe back in the late 80's. I have loads of wonderful memories of the place. Like, the tour of the Grolsh brewery about a 10-minute drive away Wink (Free samples...and lots of 'em!...Beer). What's to become of of the base? Will it still retain a military function? Converted to civilian use?

It will be phased out completely by the end of 2007. As far as I know, it will be transferred to the civies.

Greets,

I know how you feel, I too have been stationed at many bases that either have shut down or are at half their operating capacity. The world is changing and Not for the better (just look to the Middle East). US law makers and funding fools have no real clue how to keep the bases open (and on alert in case of conflict, protecting our own assets or that of our allies) and as we see now, the deployment of troops since the fall of the evil empire (Cold War) has not made things easier, they have gotten far worse in my opinion globally.

The fool law makers, whom most have never served or been overseas to deploy or really understand the evil that exist, have no idea how badly they have collectively hurt the US Defenses, the global economy with their foolish cutbacks and massive draw-downs.

I believe we collectively are in deep sh*t and we will feel the pain more before positive steps are taken to secure our country and that of our allies. It is a damn stupid shame but the cries for help fall on def ears in congress or the Senate. *****...all, I love the USA but what law makers are doing to our country with all of this and their terrible not thought out long term plan is killing us for security and defense...damn them for it. It has to get better, we cant rely on a single weapons system , tow or three for our security, it takes multiple aircraft systems, manpower, money and bases globally to keep up with the crazies of the world today, and I don't trust the Russians still!
