F-16 blk52+. 500 AIM-120C5s, JDAMs, Link 16, JHMCS, Sniper (ex-Pantera) targetting pod, AIM9-8/9s, CFT etc. etc.. MLU'd F-16s will also get JHMCS and the same V9 radars as the blk52+ to be acquired.

Overall a very nice package and worth quite a few bucks ($5 billion).

Yes the controversy over the make-up of this deal for PAF is over now.

  • 36 F-16s C/Ds Block 50/52
  • 60 MLU kits for 32 existing F-16s A/B Block 15 and additional 28 F-16s A/B Block 15 from US-EDA stocks (most probably the earlier embargoed F-16s due to their low air-frame hours).
  • 26 new engines for the existing F-16s A/B and most importantly the long sought after BVR weapon system (AIM-120C AMRAAM)

It is expected to pass congress even though a report on an Indian web site says that the congress will review this deal on 13th July. there is not much hue and cry in India as their nuke deal has passed congressional review.

This sets things straight - India won't choose the Viper as MiG-21FL replacement (the 126 planes contract).

I think most of the people will agree with you. After this deal there is no way India is going to buy F-16's.

That is 34 existing Vipers and 26 additional ones - two have already been delivered free of charge. Now they request engine and structure modications only for 26 used planes here: http://www.dsca.mil/PressReleases/36-b/ ... _06-11.pdf

The embargoed planes are not going anywhere, they are used as agressors by the Navy/USAF and test planes for LM - so they will take other planes out of AMARC.

I think fron the get-go, the IAF has made twin engines a requirement, (although LM may have been able to sway them away from that requirement but it does not look like that will happen). Secondly, for IAF to consider any F-16, it will have to be a package tailored for them which would increase the cost....so of the American hardware, only Hornets remain..with AESA and twin-engines, that may be a viable option, however the complications with ToT and price stipulations may lead to further upgraded Mig-29 order...but who knows.

Thanks for the DSCA references. I just posted an article with an overview on http://www.f-16.net/news_article1878.html

Correct RoAF, see the news article "<a href="news_article1536.html">Two F-16s complete with latest upgrades delivered to Pakistan</a>" (December 15, 2005 - by G. A. Volb).

I remember a time when we thought Pakistan will never get F-16A/Bs - let alone new-built Block 52+ Smile.

Is there a possibility of also procuring ex-Norweigian and ex-Dutch F-16s?

I think that its a good deal for Pakistan and they get 500 AMRAAM's.

Let's say Pakistan does get J-10's can they use AMRAAM's on those aircraft.

PAF will not integrate AIM-120 on the J-10s. The J-10s and the JF-17s are specifically being mated to SD-10 (PL-12) for the standoff capability...the rails and the sw integration for AIM-120s may not be an easy task on the J-10s (aside from political clearance issues). Rest of the AIM-9 series will probably be integrated as has been the norm with the PAF ever since the J-6s entered service with AIM-9Ps.

There is a fair possibility that J-10 and JF-17 will be equipped with South African and/or European munitions (in addition to Chinese); there shouldn't be a lot of political issues if at the SA munitions were produced locally under license, and integratation done at home. With regards to the F-16s, they will probably be equipped with only American weaponry; I'd imagine that we may see another DSCA notification for more ammunition sometime in the future, may include AIM-9X, HARM, etc?

I'm thinking that when we retire our F-16s, they'll go to new NATO allies like Bulgaria, Romania and the Baltics.

Looking at the package there is one thing I don't understand. The new block 50/52 planes are being priced at $40 million a piece. The PAF is getting its older fleet upgraded at $1.3 billion and reports that are available suggest these upgraded planes would still be less advanced than the new ones. Why then does the PAF not buy another squadron of the new planes at $ 720 million and use the rest of the money to buy the used F-16s to make up for numbers. This way they would have 54 of the block 50/52 and the total F-16s in the fleet would exceed 100. I can't understand why are they buying these less advanced planes.
