I was right in my gut feeling that bombs were dropped by vipers.

The video released from CNN seems like a LGB run, is that the same symbology and targeting used for JDAMs? CNN article doesn't mention JDAMs but F-16.net has a picture of a Viper releasing a JDAM ...

Great job from the ones involved ! One "big head" less, hopefully many more to go until these nuts stop. Smile

Although not proficient at the Viper displays, it would look to me like an LGB kill, target crosshair, "laser" sign etc.

We have no exact information. The picture of the JDAM was just a guess.

Maj. Don Sheesley, 416th Flight Test Squadron project pilot, releases for the first time ever a 500-pound Joint Direct Attack Munition. In support of real-world operations, testers from the Global Power Fighters Combined Test Force here performed accelerated testing to equip the F-16 with a 500-pound JDAM, or GBU-38, that was completed July 16.

So perhaps we need to chang it to this picture instead:

The 388th FW Commander's aircraft dropping a 500lbs LGB. Note the ALQ-184 ECM pod on the centerline, and the Sidewinder body on the port wing containing telemetry equipment.

So which unit is it that can chalk one up?

Nose art on RNOAF F-16AM #671 in Kyrgystan. This F-16 dropped 5 LGB's on Afghan targets.

I raise my glass to the pilots, maintainers, special forces, intel, force protenction, air traffic controllers, services personnel, expiditors, maintenance superintendants, flight chiefs, CE, and everyone else accross the spectrum that made this great day happen. It's not over but a major milestone has been achieved. Great work brothers and sisters in arms!!

Congratulations to Lieven for his immediate response! Well done! And - from Germany - special thanks to all U.S. servicemembers who risk their lives (since years) every day to eliminate any Al Qaida and other terrorist threat in Iraq and Afghanistan. Thumb Unfortunately, too much U.S. servicemembers were killed in action, especially after the end of the main combat phases of both operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. Salute

Related to the kill of top-terrorist Zarqawi, USAF today published the following news release:

Quote:
Coalition forces kill Abu Musab al-Zarqawi

6/8/2006 - BAGHDAD, Iraq (AFPN) -- Gen. George W. Casey Jr., Multi-National Force-Iraq commanding general, announced the death of al-Qaida in Iraq leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi in the following statement during a press conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Zalmay Khalilzad on June 8:

"Ladies and gentlemen, coalition forces killed al-Qaida terrorist leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and one of his key lieutenants, spiritual advisor Sheik Abd-al-Rahman, yesterday, June 7, at 6:15 p.m. in an air strike against an identified, isolated safe house.

"Tips and intelligence from Iraqi senior leaders from his network led forces to al-Zarqawi and some of his associates who were conducting a meeting approximately eight kilometers north of Baqubah when the air strike was launched."

In a later press conference, Maj. Gen. William B. Caldwell IV, spokesperson for the Multi-National Force Iraq, confirmed that Air Force aircraft were involved in this coalition effort. There were two F-16 Fighting Falcons that carried out the air strike.

"Iraqi police were first on the scene after the air strike, and elements of Multi-National Division North, arrived shortly thereafter," General Casey said. "Coalition forces were able to identify al-Zarqawi by fingerprint verification, facial recognition and known scars.

"Al-Zarqawi and al-Qaida in Iraq have conducted terrorist activities against the Iraqi people for years in attempts to undermine the Iraqi national government and coalition efforts to rebuild and stabilize Iraq," General Casey said. "He is known to be responsible for the deaths of thousands of Iraqis. Al-Zarqawi’s death is a significant blow to al-Qaida and another step toward defeating terrorism in Iraq.

"Although the designated leader of al-Qaida in Iraq is now dead, the terrorist organization still poses a threat as its members will continue to try to terrorize the Iraqi people and destabilize their government as it moves toward stability and prosperity. Iraqi forces, supported by the coalition, will continue to hunt terrorists that threaten the Iraqi people until terrorism is eradicated in Iraq."

At German TV, I saw a short video of the impact, possibly taken by one of the two involved Vipers. In the next couple of days, I will search all usual online sources for some more details, especially related to my topic OIF Vipers ("F-16 Combat History"). And I´m nearly sure, in the next couple of days we will get an USAF or U.S. CENTCOM news article related to the involved Viper pilots.

As soon as I saw the video on CNN, I knew it was a viper that got him. My guess is that it would have been GBU-12's based on the fact they had the LANTIRN pod video.

To EVERYBODY involved, GOOD JOB!

They said they dropped two bombs, one a 500 pound LGB and the other a 500 pound JDAM, both bombs dropped by the same aircraft... With that sort of firepower I'd have expected the monster to be turned into a pink mist. I wonder what his last thought was...

Someone find out who the pilot who is and give him a medal...

Still no word on which Unit's F-16's were involved on this one? My Old Unit is doing a tour over in Iraq right now and I'd like to know if it was one of Birds I used to wrench on? Smile

I'd also like to offer a Flag Case and Certificate Frame to the Pilot and Weapons Crew.

God Bless our Men and Women Taking the Fight to them!

Right now the 421st FS is at Balad. They replaced the 4th FS. Not sure what Guard/Reserve units are there currently.
