I don't know if this is the right place to post this, but can anyone post pictures of painted Air Force helmets? I'm seeking to paint something cool!

BLK52+, the current helmet used by the USAF is not authorized to be painted (with the exception of the Thunderbirds, who wear an older-style helmet specifically so they CAN paint it). Even before we switched to the current helmet, though, I don't really know of any "stylized" helmets in the USAF. I'm pretty sure that was primarily a Navy thing, made popular by Hollywood, specifically in the movie "Top Gun".

You sure you're not thinking of the embroidered cloth visor cover?

I never said it didn't happen, I said it wasn't legal.

Taco's in the Guard where compliance is more of an optional thing....

I'll betcha KOJAK is asked to take that thing home before the next SAV or UCI

BTW I'm a retired ex-ALS Superintendent, I know a little something about 55/P helmets

You are absolutely right. I in no way meant to say you didn't know what you were talking about. I know the regs as well. The helmet does get hidden and is a TDY special only. Razz

Please excuse my ignorance here folks, but WHY exactly is helmet painting such a frowned upon thing? Is it Air Force uniformity requirements? Or does paint have some effect on the outer shell of the helmets the way it does with some motorcycle helmets? I've had my Simpson RX-6 sprayed up a couple of times by a good mate who knows just what paint to use.. Very Happy

While we're on the subject of helmets though, is it ever possible to buy surplus US Air Force helmets anywhere at all?? I would LOVE to get one as a display to go with all my aircraft models...

You can buy brand new HGU-55s if you'd like...but startnig at $500, that;s kinda pricey for something that's gonna sit on a shelf.

How much would you say your airplane model collection is worth?

Yes, very true.. It would be a pricey shelf item, but certainly NOT the most expensive item I have purchased purely as a collectible...

I am also into Formula One and Motorcycle racing, so my Wheel and tire and rear wing off Michael Schumacher's Benetton take the title of priciest.. Closely followed by my two autographed Kevin Schwantz helmets (both styles)

A pilot's helmet may be an expensive item, but as a collector, you somehow justify it...

Thanks for the link...
