I think the "just sat and watched" theory sounds like valid explanation. Why give away valuble information like response times, operation procedures, etc. just to bring down a drone?
It kind of reminds me of the stories I read about in the days leading up to Desert Storm when flights of F-15s would charge toward the Iraqi border and turning back at the last second right before crossing into Iraq in order to force the SAMs and AAA batteries to light up their radars, all while an RC-135 orbited nearby soaking up all of the emmisions, gathering information about the air defences. |

| Maybe the guys on the carrier didn't think a crazy guy in an ultralight was a threat..... |

| If it indeed was a UAV like that, you're probably right. Not worth a missile, as someone else said you could drop it out of the sky with jetwash. |

| Depending on how far out it was, I'd say let the guys have some fun with it. Break out the M-16s and see who could hit it first (if it were close enough, I seriously doubt it). I want to take a little boat out towards it and a big hose and just spray the thing and make it fall out of the sky. Honestly, this probably doesn't mean anything, its just a well, I guess we have to deploy to make it look like we care. I don't know how much they can seriously find out that couldn't be found out with a good google search. I don't know if that little thing has the sensors to delve really deeply in secrets or what. |

| Just talked to a buddy of mine who just left active duty with the USN and spent tons of time on carriers. This typically happens in the Straits of Hormuz and has been going on for years by lots of different countries. They are allowed to fly around the ships - just not directly overhead. Not a big deal but Iran needs the press to flex their muscle. If you put all the past six months worth of news reports about Iran together you'll see the pattern. This just fits in with all that. Sounds like their Minister of Propaganda is doing his job. |

Possibly a combination of a few things really. Propaganda and intel`. Just my opinion here of course.
The USAF has been throwing drones and fighters towards Iranian airspace for two years to try to get them to light up their air defence radars. There is some info` you can`t get by Googling The kind of op` VIPERFab detailed.
It dosn`t matter what type of UAV Iran uses, it could actually be a real live flying lawnmower, I have seen RC ones fly. It doesn`t need a single sensor on board...
All you need is passive signals/comms receiving gear land based to do your work to get the info` that is not available through Google! Iraq got help from Russia on US GPS weapons prior to GW2. Ok, didn`t do them a lot of good, but lets not assume that Iran or any other country does things in isolation..they might or might not be getting "aid".
Now, I know the military will change a lot of things signals/comms wise ie, one set of frequencies used during peacetime, another set during war, along with encryption but response times rarely change... |

If this truly happened, it's only because we let it. If we'd wanted to, well, in a word, Phalanx. |

Not at 15.000 feet, it doesn't have that kind of range on the vertical |

| Yeah, the mount can't elevate that high even if it did have the range. |
