You're actually thinking of a series called Robotech. It looks like its from the 80's. The airplanes definitely transformed into giant fighting robots. It was a good series, but a little on the old side. How about the F-35 Balor? They tend to wield a vorpal greatsword which makes sense for the mission of the F-35. Cut off the head and the body dies. But only if you roll a nat 20. I feel so pathetic for this .
Alright, here's the Monster Manual list... Wizards is going to have my head.
Solar
Astral Deva
Arrowhawk
Beholder (that would be really cool for the ABL or an AWACS)
Cloaker
Couatl (we'd have to paint it rainbow colors)
Balor (and by extension Demon)
Quasit
Succubus?
Imp
Pit Fiend (and by extension Devil)
Dragon (pick your flavor, they're color coded for convenience)
Ghaele
Air elemental?
Genie (yes I know it was a missile or something like that)
Efreet
Ghost (Shaba anyone )
Harpy
Hippogriff
Invisible Stalker
Kraken (carrier variant only)
Lich (for sh**s and giggles)
Manticore
Mephit?
Mimic (now the F-35 is a treasure chest)
Illithid
Nightmare (flying horse with fire coming off it)
Nightwing
Ogre mage
You can call it an ooze if you want.
Owlbear
Pegasus (this used to a class of ships in service I believe)
Phase Spider?
Roc
Shadow
Slaad
Spectre
Sprite (we'll just name it pixie and call it a fruitcake)
Troll?
Unicorn
Vampire
Will-O'-Wisp
Wraith (my personal favorite)
Wyvern
Drake
Now, I believe I just won the pathetic award from this site and intend to keep the title for a while. Though if ever get a laser for the 35, then we can call it Gundam Zero with the Buster Cannon. That would have to make the 22 Tallgeese or something like that. I'm just digging my hole deeper and deeper. Now don't make me delve, I've got many more books full of freaky @ss monsters that have no right to see the light of day.
Sferrin, you also forgot the whole thing about playing tennis on top of it. Well, there's an entire thread about best and worst nicknames somewhere. |

Now Habu, do you mean:
Mobile Suit: Gundam
Gundam Wing
Gundam: 0080
Gundam: 0081
Gundam: 0082
Gundam: 0083
G Gundam
Gundam GT
Gundam Seed
Gundam: 08th MS
Yes, there are that many Gundam series out there. There may be more, but I can't name them off the top of my head. It seems to be the single most prolific and propogated anime name. I know full well what Gundam is, wow we're arguing about anime in a thread about naming the F-35. |

I just meant Gundam in general. And I think it's from Gundam Wing, Char's Counterattack.
But anyway, if the F-2 can carry Gundam style missiles, why not name the next aircraft after one? |

I prefer: Mamba, delete 'Black' to keep the name short. Cyclone is also the name of a Pratt & Whitney piston engine, but sounds good.
Nicknames: Unicorn, the F-35 is a pain in the a$$ for the taxpayers, Treasury and enemy and a pleasure in the 6 o'clock for some politicians.
Spider, sounds like Viper; Spider= Stealthy Penetrator International Defense Electronic Recon, or Stealthy Predator International Doing Every Role.
Spitfire II, Lightning II/ III is a bad idea, Spitfire II is an insult. |

considering all the up an downs of any development program the final choice seems appropiate considering what's been going on since this JSF program started. the F-35 an all the JSF applications will come up out of the ashes to fly no matter what obstacles are put in the way of it's future. again, it only seems appropriate that the name fits the F-35 |

| Any II or III names are unoriginal and, in a way, insulting, to the original aircraft. Phoenix and Reaper seem to be decent names, although, has the name Thunderstrike been brought up? That sounds like a bad@$$ name and I don't think it has been used before. |

Thunderbolt II, well not really an insult, but it doesn't fit the aircraft at all. Ground pounders like the hog should be named something more like that they were. I didn't know the A-10 was called the Thunderbolt II for years, I always thought it was called the Warthog (when I was a kid). The names aren't meant to be insults, but sometimes they can be interpreted that way.
Phantom II, something that big should never be named Phantom. It's kinda like naming the B-52 Shrimp. That does not make sense. Oh well, the pilots will name them what they please and that will become the vernacular. I personally like the more dark and sinister names, but I'm a twisted little boy . |

Maybe there shouldn't be a name, you know, keep it plain an simple. We think there's something up in the sky that's on our rader but we don't know what it is.......It's a bird......It's a plane.....It's.....to late where dead!!!!! |

Bunny, YGFBSM! Perhaps you forget that the P-47 Thunderbolt was the primary CAS aircraft and tank buster (sound familiar? ) of the USAAC during WWII. Just take a look at it, and you can tell it wasn't built to be a fighter only. It could carry 2,000 lbs. of ordnance. Due to its huge nose, it earned the nickname "Jug," could take a helluva lot of hits, and bring the driver back. Oh yeah, it just happened to shoot down a lot of BF-109s and FW-190s on the side.

As the son of a Rhino Crew Dog, I finally have the excuse to use this one...
Playback some 'Nam footage. Listen to one of those big, smokey, Double Ugly, Rhino, Flying Bricks as she's rolling in to drop "Snakes and Napes" on Charlie. When she passes overhead at high speed, listen to that howling sound she makes. Sounds very ghost-like.
Oh yeah, BTW, back when the F-4 was built, McAir named all of their fighters with ghost names...Demon, Voodoo, Banshee, Goblin, Phantom I and II.

Thus once again proving that I can post stupid stuff on this site . The other names for the Phantom were far, FAR more appropriate, Rhino, Double Ugly, etc.
As for the A-10, it just doesn't seem like a Thunderbolt, Righteous Hammer of God I could go for though . And actually TC, I never new what the original Thunderbolt was or what it did. Unfortunately, my aircraft knowledge is primarily 4th gen, 5th gen, and a little third gen. That's just when I was born, ya know? |

Although I think, with the UKs heavy participation in the program.... it should be the Lightning III not II.
Andy
EDIT: Snypa mate, they are the official final names oh and Griffon is the name of the RAFs AB412s (twin engined huey).
To bad Hurricane didn't make the cut? It has been used on fighters from many notable Air Forces. The UK, JAPAN, and Italy to name just a few! It can also be easily translated. Further, like the name Fury. The Naval version can have "Sea" before. Thereby being called Sea Hurriance! Personally, I would be happy with either Fury or Hurricane....................

I like Phoenix -the name reminds me of all of the attempts to cancel the plane after the fzall of the Berlin Wall. Most approprate name Some of the others like the Spitfire II are lame at best and insulting at worst.
My 2 cents.
